Transportation Equipment and Technologies

The “Transportation Engineering and Technologies” program trains mechanical engineers—bachelor’s degree holders—in the design, construction, manufacturing, testing, repair, operation, and maintenance of transportation equipment (internal combustion engines, automotive equipment, and railway equipment).

5.5. Transportation, Shipping, and Aviation

Classes for the “Transport Engineering and Technologies” major are conducted at a modern European standard.

Lectures are held in classrooms equipped with multimedia resources, audio-visual systems, and overhead projectors for teaching.

The classrooms where laboratory exercises are conducted are equipped with training benches for various automotive functional systems and assemblies, road testing equipment; a static wheel load testing rig for pneumatic tires; a rig for studying the statics of a track drive mechanism; a test rig for brake system regulators, etc.; models of front and rear axles, gearboxes, automotive engines, clutches, various automotive components, and assembled units. The department has a pneumatics laboratory, established with the financial support of “SMC Industrial Automation” EOOD—Sofia, which is equipped with a pneumatic training simulator.

During their studies, students will have access to a computer lab equipped with licensed software products, including the Microsoft Office-MSDN package for designing mechanical engineering products, as well as CAD/CAM systems—NX 4, Solid Edge, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and MATLAB.

Practical training is a major component of the curriculum. It is provided through:

- specialized internships at partner companies, “BALKANKAR – RECORD” - Plovdiv, “BALKAN” AD – Lovech, specialized service centers for the maintenance of transportation equipment, and other companies in the fields of manufacturing, services (there are currently over 3 million vehicles in Bulgaria), marketing, and management of transportation equipment, both domestically and abroad;

- The thesis internship at the Technical University of Sofia, Plovdiv Branch, takes place either at the department or at companies, depending on the topic and the student’s choice;

- Students also receive practical training through laboratory sessions, the completion of course assignments and projects, as well as their thesis work.

To support the education of students in the “Transport Engineering and Technologies” program, an information center has been established, equipped with educational and specialized materials in both print and electronic formats. This center is connected to the university network with high-speed Internet access.

During the first four semesters, students receive a very solid foundation in the fundamental and general engineering knowledge required of a classical mechanical engineer, covering: mathematics, physics, materials science, mechanics, strength of materials, the finite element method, machine elements, thermal engineering, hydrodynamics and gas dynamics, as well as in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics, computer science, mechanical engineering technology, and others.

In the following semesters, students study a variety of specialized courses that provide them with knowledge of transportation engineering and technologies in the areas of:

- theory, construction, and design of transportation equipment: internal combustion engines, automotive engineering (cars, buses, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, etc.), railway engineering (locomotives, passenger and freight cars, trams, subway rolling stock, etc.);

- dynamics, strength, and reliability of transportation equipment;

- technologies for the manufacture, maintenance, repair, testing, and diagnostics of transportation equipment;

- technologies for organizing the operation of vehicles and road and rail transport, as well as their interaction with other modes of transport.

The knowledge and skills acquired enable bachelor’s degree holders in “Transport Engineering and Technologies” to find excellent employment opportunities and career advancement in public and private companies, enterprises, and institutions in the fields of: the manufacture, repair, and maintenance of transport equipment, automotive and rail transportation, energy, agricultural mechanization, construction and mining, education, and other fields, as well as in companies involved in the organization, management, and operation of transportation equipment.

Students who successfully complete the bachelor’s degree program may continue their studies toward a master’s degree both at the Technical University of Sofia, Plovdiv Branch, and at universities abroad.
