Mechatronics is a relatively new interdisciplinary specialty that has been intensively taught in over 90 universities in recent years. Over the last 35-40 years, all highly developed industrial countries have shown great interest in mechanical engineering and its automation. In the early 1970s, simultaneously with the mass introduction of industrial robots into the Japanese industry, the concept of Mechatronics emerged. Modern mechanical engineering increasingly integrates electronics and automation in the form of sensors, actuators, and computers into the instruments, machines, and systems being developed. The design, production, and operation of mechatronic systems require a new engineering approach due to the joint functioning of components from mechanics, optics, optoelectronics, electrical engineering, and electronics, which is characteristic of these systems. Mechatronics is a new specialty that is not just a combination of its constituent disciplines, but a mutual penetration and merging of mechanical, electronic, and computer structures to realize a complete, functionally fully functional product, called a 'mechatronic product'.

The "Mechatronics" specialization aligns with global trends in the development of the most promising and innovative areas of engineering sciences, as it combines the methods of mechanics, electronics, and information computer technologies to create next-generation machines and robots. Students acquire knowledge and skills in the fields of mechanics, electronics, microprocessor technology, informatics, and computer control, which are an integral part of machines, instruments, and systems in all areas of modern production, from office and household appliances to automotive engineering and medical equipment. The training is organized around the priority use of CAD/CAM/CAE systems and software, enabling rapid adaptation of engineering personnel to the requirements of the domestic and international labor markets.

Access to further education: Those who have successfully completed the specialty with a bachelor's degree have the right to apply for a master's program, and those who have completed the specialty with a master's degree have the right to apply for a doctoral program in Bulgaria or abroad in suitable scientific fields.

The training in the specialty "Mechatronics" allows students to acquire in-depth and integrated theoretical and practical preparation in the fields of: mechanical engineering, instrument making, electrical engineering, electronics, information-computing and systems engineering, etc., with the aim of creating, implementing, and operating mechatronic systems.

The specialty provides sufficient general professional preparation and solid basic knowledge necessary for future engineering-scientific activities and ensures appropriate professional flexibility. It provides knowledge of the methodological approach to the design and implementation of mechatronic systems with diverse purposes.
The bachelor's course of the specialty "Mechatronics" includes two main modules: robotics, fine-mechanical engineering.

"Robotics" - design, programming, and manufacturing of industrial robots, mobile and service robots, teleoperators, microrobots, manipulative technology, and robotic systems; actuators for robots; new materials and principles for building and controlling micro and mobile robots in medicine; robotic and computerized technologies; modeling and simulation of robotic systems; diagnostics, operation, and maintenance of objects and robotic systems.
"Fine and Micromechanical Engineering" - design, manufacturing, operation, diagnostics, and maintenance of office and security equipment; optical and laser technology; micromechanics, medical technology; measuring technology; optoelectronic technology.

Both directions have a common theoretical foundation, including general engineering and general specialty disciplines, satisfying both the general requirements of mechanical engineers and the specific requirements for mechatronics mechanical engineers, where knowledge and skills in mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer technologies are combined. Each module includes four specialized disciplines that specify and deepen the preparation in the respective direction.

The main departments at TU-Sofia, Plovdiv branch, that train students in the specialty "Mechatronics", are the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Instrumentation from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Instrumentation with the active support of the departments of the Faculty of Electronics and Automation.

The Mechatronics training provides competence and the opportunity to work in the fields of mechanical engineering, electronics, automation technology, and informatics. A "Mechatronics Engineer" is a coordinator who unites specialists from the group for the development of projects in the aforementioned specialties. Engineers with such qualifications are in high demand.
