The Faculty of Transport has existed as an independent unit within the Machine-Electrical Engineering Institute – Sofia since 1963. Initially, it included the departments of "Internal Combustion Engines and Automobiles", "Technical Mechanics", "Railway Rolling Stock", and "Electric Transport".
Today, the faculty operates five departments: "Air Transport", "Engines, Automotive Technology and Transport", "Railway Technology and Technologies", "Mechanics", and "Strength of Materials".
In 2013, the Faculty of Transport celebrated its 50th anniversary. The jubilee was marked within the framework of the international scientific conference "BulTrans 2013", dedicated to aviation, automotive, and railway technology and engineering.
In early 2014, motivated students from the Technical University – Sofia formed the first university Formula Student team. It included representatives from the Faculty of Machine Technology, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of German Engineering Education and Industrial Management, the Faculty of English Engineering Education, the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technologies, and the Faculty of Transport. The team received support from the university's management and faculty members.
Since 2008, the Faculty of Transport has participated annually in the international Shell Eco-marathon competition with its own team of students and faculty members. They design and build the vehicles representing the university. In the development of urban cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells, students use the modern Siemens NX CAD/CAM/CAE software for three-dimensional design.
In early 2023, the retro club "Orter" was established under the Department of "Engines, Automotive Technology and Transport". Its main goal is the restoration, preservation, and promotion of road vehicles with historical value. The club's activities focus on retro and classic cars, as well as scientific research related to them.
The head of the retro club "Orter" is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Iliyan Damyanov.
