Aviation Technology and Engineering

The training in the specialty "Aviation Technology and Engineering" is carried out under the leading role of the Department of Air Transport at the Faculty of Transport. The department prepares specialists with higher education for almost all areas of civil aviation.The main goal of the specialty is the establishment of the foundation of aviation education and qualification. The training prepares specialists for the needs of aviation, air transport, flight and technical operation of aircraft, maintaining their airworthiness and servicing ground aviation equipment.Graduates of the specialty find employment with aviation operators, airport complexes, manufacturing and maintenance enterprises, research and implementation units, as well as in the public administration.The nature of the subject area determines the development of the specialty in accordance with international aviation standards and recommendations, ensuring high quality of education and compliance with the requirements of the global aviation industry.Practical training of students is carried out in cooperation with leading Bulgarian aviation companies, including: Lufthansa Technik Sofia, Bulgaria Air, Hemus Air, Air Scorpio, Heli Air, ATC (Air Traffic Control).These partnerships provide access to real aviation equipment, modern technologies, and a professional environment.Based on accumulated experience and the traditions of Bulgarian higher aviation education, priority is given to specialized training in ""Operation of Aircraft" and "Operation of Electronic-Instrument Aviation Equipment".The specialty has a long and rich history. Until 1958 it existed as "Aircraft Construction" at the State Polytechnic (VMEI) – today Technical University – Sofia. From 1972 to 1990 – as specialties for Civil aviation. From 1992 – as specializations in operation and maintenance of aviation equipment in the multidisciplinary specialty "Transportation Technology and Technologies". From 1997 – as an independent specialty "Aviation Technology and Engineering" to the Technical University – Sofia.

What are the admission requirements?

What will I learn?

At the educational and qualification level of "Bachelor", the aviation engineer must know:

the fundamentals of general theoretical disciplines and computer science in the volume necessary for solving production and operational tasks in Civil Aviation;
general engineering disciplines, including mechanics, strength of materials, aviation materials science, design fundamentals, technical measurements, electrical engineering, electronics, theory of automatic control, thermodynamics and heat transfer, fluid mechanics;
specialized engineering disciplines, including aerodynamics and flight dynamics, theory of aviation engines, structure and strength of aircraft and aviation engines, stability and controllability of aircraft, automated air traffic control systems, fundamentals of aircraft production and technical maintenance, their equipment and aviation engines;
applied engineering disciplines, such as operational rules, maintenance technology for aviation equipment, air navigation, rules and technology of air traffic control, practical methods for ensuring high reliability and airworthiness of aviation equipment considering operational conditions, diagnostic systems and non-destructive testing methods for aviation equipment, and testing methods for aviation equipment;
organization of engineering work, including industry economics within an aviation production structure, technical safety issues, fundamentals of air law, metrological support and work organization, the current state and development prospects of aviation equipment.

My career

Graduates of the specialization can work as:

engineers in the design and manufacturing of aircraft,
operation and maintenance of aircraft, ground and flight operation of aircraft,
operation and maintenance of electronic and instrument aviation equipment,
air traffic management,
operation of airport equipment,
the aviation administration.

The obtained higher aviation education (Bachelor of Aviation Engineering and Master of Aviation Engineering) provides the opportunity for licensing to all levels of aviation competency according to international requirements.
