Have you ever wondered why laptops today are lightweight and compact, smartphones fit in a pocket, and televisions are thin and can be wall-mounted?
At the core of all these technologies lies microelectronics.
It is microelectronics that makes it possible to create miniature, intelligent, and highly efficient electronic devices. To design and manufacture them, a deep understanding of materials, technological processes, and methods for fabricating their basic building blocks is required.
The training in the specialization "Microelectronics" provides knowledge and practical skills in the field of modern micro- and nanoelectronic technologies, the design and production of electronic components and integrated circuits. Students receive solid engineering training in the field of electronic and information technologies and their application in modern industry.
Graduates of the specialization have excellent opportunities for professional realization both in Bulgaria and abroad, in companies developing and producing electronic components, systems, and intelligent devices.

The beginning of the Department of Microelectronics was laid in 1971, when a Problem Research Laboratory for Semiconductor Devices and Semiconductor Circuitry was established under the Department of Semiconductor and Industrial Electronics, headed by Prof. Yordan Dimitrov. The head of the "Semiconductor Devices" direction was Senior Assistant Dr. Filip Filipov.
The main stages in the development of the department are:
1976 – The Problem Scientific Research Laboratory "Semiconductor and Hybrid Technologies" was established, headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filip Filipov.
1979 – The production unit "Semiconductor Elements" was established within the Scientific Research Laboratory "Semiconductor Devices" at the Educational-Experimental Plant of the Higher Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (now Technical University – Sofia), with Georgi Bochev as chief technologist.
1982 – The Department "Design, Technology and Production of Semiconductor and Microelectronic Elements" was established, headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filip Filipov.
1985 – The production unit was expanded into the production unit "Production of Microelectronic Elements", headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filip Filipov.
1994 – The Scientific-Production Laboratory "Design in Electronics and Microelectronics" was established, headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marin Hristov.
2008 – The department adopted its current name – "Microelectronics".
