Within the bachelor's programs "Mechanical Engineering and Instrumentation" and "Mechatronics" the Department of "Precision Engineering and Instrumentation" offers training in the following areas:
- Metrology and Measuring Technology;
- Finomechanical equipment;
- Optical and laser equipment;
- Medical equipment;
- Office equipment;
- Converters, instruments and systems for measuring and controlling physico-mechanical and geometric quantities;
- Micromechanics;
- Quality control and management.
The Department has leading role in the training of master's students in "Metrology, Precision Mechanics and Optics", "Mechatronics" and "Technical Legislation and Quality Management".
The main areas of development of the department in recent years are:
- Disclosure in 2005 of the specialty "Mechatronics" with bachelor's and master's degrees. Here, the foundation is laid on three foundations - mechanical engineering, electronics and informatics. Two specializations are offered - in robotics and in instrumentation.
- The training is conducted jointly with the Department of "Automation of Discrete Production" and the Faculties of Electronics and Computer Systems;
- Disclosure in 2007 of a master's specialization "Technical Legislation and Quality Management". It admits bachelor's students from all technical specialties, both from within and outside TU-Sofia, for training. The training has a managerial focus - based on European and Bulgarian legislation and standardization, it prepares personnel for the development and implementation of quality control and management systems, environmental systems, occupational health and safety systems, information security, and other industry-specific systems.
Since the postgraduate qualification (PGQ) at the department is conducted within the framework of two separate schools. In recent years, the activities in both schools have been expanded and modernized. Department faculty members conduct training in PGQ courses in the following areas:
- Metrology and metrological assurance;
- Technical legislation and quality management.
Classes are held in the postgraduate training schools jointly with the Union of Metrologists and the German company TÜV Rheinland, which issues internationally recognized qualification certificates for personnel as experts, auditors, and quality managers.
The department conducts doctoral (PhD) training in four scientific specialties. Over 60 people have been trained, of whom 22 have successfully defended their dissertations.
