The Department of "Automation of Discrete Production" was established in 1970. At that time, by a decision of the Council of Ministers, the specialty "Automation of Discrete Production" (ADP) was created. Separately, by an order of the Ministry of National Education and a decision of the management of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of "Automation of Discrete Production" was established. The initiator for its creation was Prof. Dr. Eng. Vladimir Savov Ganovski. From the 1970/71 academic year, training of students in the specialty "Automation of Discrete Production" began with an initial intake of 25 students.
Over the past more than 50 years, more than 2780 engineers have been trained at the department. More than 77 monographs, books, textbooks, and study aids have been published by the department's faculty. More than 152 research projects have been developed, most of which have been implemented in engineering practice and the educational process.
Since 1998, the department has annually held the International Scientific and Technical Conference "Automation of Discrete Production" within the framework of Science Days, organized by TU-Sofia. Leading scientists from Bulgaria and abroad participate in the conference. A youth session is held, where innovative developments by students and young scientists are presented. A presentation of companies working in the field of automated discrete production and mechatronics is organized. Within the framework of the conference, a round table is held to discuss current issues and problems in education, science, and business.
Since 2019, the department has published the journal "Automation of Discrete Production", which has a scientific and applied focus in the fields of automation of discrete production, mechatronics, robotics, virtual engineering, and innovation. It is included in the National Reference List of Contemporary Bulgarian Scientific Publications with Peer Review under ID No. 3188 with ISSN 2682-9584.
