The Department of "Automation of Electric Drives" (AED) was established in 1974 upon the division of the Department of "Industrial Automation". In 1997, the Department of "Automation of Electric Drives" merged with the Department of "Robotics". Within the structure of the merged department, a section "Robotics" was formed, which offers the specialization in "Robotic Systems".
The department trains bachelors, masters, and doctoral students from the specialty "Automation, Information and Control Engineering" (AICE) in the directions "Electric Drives and Machine Automation" (EMA) – for bachelors, and "Automated Production Systems" (APS) – for masters. Department members are authors or co-authors of 31 textbooks and study aids, as well as eight monographs and books.
The Department of "Automation of Electric Drives" conducts courses in the field of automated electric drives both at the foreign faculties of the Technical University – Sofia and at other faculties of the university. In the future, it is planned to develop and introduce new academic courses that will be taught at the other faculties of TU-Sofia.
