The main goal of the training in the specialty "Medical Engineering" (ME) is to prepare highly qualified and broadly profiled specialists with a solid general engineering background and in-depth knowledge of medical engineering, capable of researching and developing devices, mechanisms, instruments, or other objects of medical engineering, carrying out activities related to optimizing and improving the characteristics of existing ones, or creating and implementing new devices, instruments, and facilities, or other objects of medical engineering.Graduates of the specialty "Medical Engineering" will perform managerial and operational activities required for the successful participation of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Single European Market. This includes ensuring compliance with European and global requirements for the safety and quality of medical devices designed and/or manufactured by Bulgarian enterprises.ME Master's graduates will be leaders in the country in developing and applying principles, methods, and tools for metrological assurance, certification, testing, and evaluation of safety and quality of medical devices as defined by the international, European, and national regulatory framework - legislative acts and standards.

Why choose this specialty?

Young engineering graduates who have completed this master's program acquire solid foundational knowledge necessary for future engineering and scientific activities and ensure their required professional flexibility. The training includes physical, biomedical, and technical aspects of medical equipment. During their studies, students gain in-depth knowledge of modern materials and methods for designing medical engineering products. Key areas of the training include measurements in medicine, regulations and standards, technical support, quality, and safety.

The program offers specializations in four modules:

"Electromedical Equipment";
"Technical Support, Legislation, and Standardization for Medical Equipment".

The "Medical Equipment" program is unique in Bulgaria and is based on the long-standing experience of TU-Sofia in this field. The teaching staff comes from leading faculties – FM, FETT, STF, FA, EF, and licensed guest lecturers.

What are the admission requirements?

Graduates with an educational and qualification level of "Bachelor" or "Master" from the following professional fields: 5.1 Mechanical Engineering; 5.2 Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation; 5.3 Communication and Computer Engineering, and 5.13 General Engineering.

Graduates from other fields within the "Technical Sciences" domain undergo bridging training.

What will I learn?

The preparation of the Master's program in the specialty "Medical Engineering" is built upon the knowledge and skills acquired during the Bachelor's studies in the following groups of disciplines: fundamental; general engineering; specialized engineering; and humanities.

An engineer with the specialty "ME" holding a Master's educational-qualificational degree must solve complex managerial and operational tasks. For this highly qualified activity, an interdisciplinary academic education is required, which covers knowledge in the following areas:

engineering sciences – materials and technologies, design, research, implementation, and maintenance of medical equipment, metrological assurance and quality control;
economic sciences – economics, marketing, project management, human resources, business communications, etc.;
information sciences – information support, automation, and computer control;
social and legal sciences – technical legislation of the EU and the Republic of Bulgaria, standardization, legal metrology.

Professional implementation can be achieved in all sectors of the national economy, science, social sphere, state and European administration, requiring higher education in the specialty.

Graduates with a master's degree can find employment performing both operational and developmental, administrative and managerial activities in hospital facilities, scientific and production organizations, state and European institutions, and international companies.

Professional implementation is also possible by continuing education at the doctoral level in science and education.

There is a large number of research institutes, private and state laboratories, commercial and production companies, state organizations, agencies, and institutions that are future potential employers for personnel with engineering training and competencies in the field of medical technology.
