About the project
"Horizon 2020" is a new programme that combines the existing programmes and instruments funding scientific research and the development of new technologies - the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, the innovation-related activities of the Framework Programme for Competitiveness and Innovation and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
With a budget of EUR 80 billion (in the EC proposal) for the period 2014-2020, the programme is part of the effort to create growth and new jobs in the EU. It links research and innovation - from scientific research to sales, all forms of innovation, by offering simplified access to funding for companies, universities, institutes from all EU countries and third countries.
The programme has three priorities:
- World-class science - strengthening the EU's position as a global leader in scientific achievements
- Competitive industries - strengthening industrial leadership through innovation, aiming to put Europe back on the path of growth and job creation
- Societal challenges - introducing new methods to address social challenges in six key areas - health, demographic change and wellbeing; food security, sustainable agriculture, maritime affairs and the bio-economy; secure, clean and efficient energy; sustainable transport; climate action, resource efficiency and inclusive, innovative and secure societies.
"Horizon 2020"" will address societal challenges by helping to build a bridge over the gap between science and the market. For example, by supporting innovative enterprises to achieve their technological breakthrough through applicable products with real commercial potential. This market-oriented approach will involve creating partnerships with the private sector and governments to gather the necessary resources.
