
The Technical University – Sofia is the leading higher technical institution in the country and the region, established in 1945, having trained over 160,000 engineers in nearly 80 years and built the technical elite of society. The University has 14 faculties, 3 of which are foreign-language – German, English and French, which award double diplomas, 2 branches in Plovdiv and Sliven, 2 colleges and 2 secondary schools in its structure. Currently, over 700 teachers work at the University, over 11,500 students are enrolled, including 750 foreign students, as well as over 300 PhD students.
The main mission of TU – Sofia is to prepare highly qualified specialists who have the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to solve the current problems of our time – the digital transition, the green economy, environmental protection, energy efficiency, healthcare, etc. TU – Sofia trains students in the most modern fields of science – intelligent systems and artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analysis, information and communication technologies, robotics, mechatronics, aviation, energy, etc.
According to the University Rating System for 2023, the Technical University – Sofia is again leading in six professional fields – "Mechanical Engineering", "Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation", "Communications and Computer Engineering", "Energy", "Transport, Shipping and Aviation" and "General Engineering".
The Technical University – Sofia is one of the seven research universities in Bulgaria, participates in three newly established Centers of Excellence and in two Competence Centers. The most significant of them is the National Center for Mechatronics and Clean Technologies, and in its campus "Student City" on the territory of TU – Sofia, 16 laboratories with equipment of the highest world level have been built. Under the project "Universities for Science, Informatics and Technologies in the e-Society (UNIte)", a Center for Digital Technologies was established.
TU – Sofia is part of the European Technological University EUt+, which unites nine universities from different countries. Within the framework of the "European Universities" initiative of the "Erasmus+" program for the second phase of EUt+, significant funding of 14.4 million euros will be secured until 2027, and in its implementation TU – Sofia will play a significant role.
The Technical University – Sofia - the Bulgarian leader in the technical, technological and innovative field, sets as a strategic goal to establish itself as a recognizable European university for the next generations. The main policies that will be implemented to achieve this goal are:
- Improving the quality of education and scientific research - the curricula will be updated in accordance with the requirements of the labor market, interdisciplinary specialties will be offered, innovative teaching methods will be implemented, including digital training and case-based training;
- Establishing itself as a European technical university – by building new international collaborations in the fields of education and research, joint international projects and programs, and creating a European center for technology transfer;
- Attracting and supporting young lecturers and researchers in teaching and research activities;
- Attracting students, including international ones – supporting early career guidance for students and their motivation to study at TU-Sofia, improving the quality of life and education for students, and encouraging their participation in the overall life of the university;
- Improving administrative management and services – accelerating the transition to electronic document flow and one-stop-shop services;
- Awareness and publicity – transparency and openness in decision-making processes, developing a new media policy, and maintaining continuous dialogue with students, lecturers, staff, and other stakeholders;
- Equality and sustainable development;
- Establishing the significance of branch campuses, colleges, and secondary schools within the university structure;
- Enhancing social, sports, and cultural activities.
During the new four-year term, the management of the Technical University – Sofia, led by its rector, Prof. Dr. Eng. Ivan Kralov, and all teachers, staff, students, and doctoral students, are ambitious to confidently follow the path of realizing this goal, adhering to the motto "Let us together build a recognized European university for the next generations".
