The Technical University – Sofia is the leading higher technical institution in the country and the region, established in 1945, having trained over 160,000 engineers in nearly 80 years and built the technical elite of society. The University has 14 faculties, 3 of which are foreign-language – English, German, and French, which award double diplomas, 2 branches in Plovdiv and Sliven, 2 colleges, and 2 secondary schools within its structure. Currently, over 700 teachers work at the university, over 11,500 students are enrolled, including 750 foreign students, as well as over 300 doctoral students. According to the University Rating System, the Technical University – Sofia has been leading for another year in six professional directions – "Mechanical Engineering", "Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation", "Communications and Computer Engineering", "Energy", "Transport, Shipping and Aviation", and "General Engineering". For the academic year 2023/2024, applicants can choose from over 37 specialties, two of which are new – "Electronic Information Systems" and "Pedagogy of Teaching Mathematics, Physics, and Informatics". The main mission of TU – Sofia is to prepare highly qualified specialists who have the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to solve the current problems of our time – the digital transition, the green economy, environmental protection, energy efficiency, healthcare, etc. TU – Sofia trains students in the most modern fields of science – intelligent systems and artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analysis, information and communication technologies, robotics, mechatronics, aviation, energy, etc. In recent years, thanks to European and national funding and business support, classrooms and laboratories have been furnished with new, modern equipment. The educational process is closely linked to research activities in accordance with the development of science and technology and the needs of the economy and society. The emphasis is on project-based and case-based learning on topics set by businesses. Students conduct their internships in a real working environment and acquire the necessary skills, while business representatives actively participate in the education of upper-year students. The Technical University – Sofia is one of the seven research universities in Bulgaria, a status awarded by the Council of Ministers due to its proven significant contribution to the development of important public sectors through top-level scientific research and high achievements in research activities. The Technical University – Sofia participates in three newly established Centers of Excellence and two Competence Centers, primarily funded by the European Operational Programme "Science and Education for Intelligent Growth". Their main task is to promote applied research and development, their implementation in industrial production, and especially their commercialization and transformation into high-value-added market products. The activities of the Centers of Excellence and the Competence Centers will contribute to the development of a knowledge-based economy, as well as to the establishment of scientific infrastructure and capacity to address significant social and economic challenges, and will contribute to the successful positioning of our country in the European Research Area. The largest is the National Center for Mechatronics and Clean Technologies, and within its "Student City" campus on the territory of TU – Sofia, 16 laboratories with world-class technologies and equipment have been built. Students and doctoral candidates work and study there under the guidance of leading professors and researchers, innovative products are developed, and technology transfer is carried out. A Center for Digital Technologies was also opened, established under the project "Universities for Science, Informatics and Technologies in the e-Society (UNIte)".
TU – Sofia is part of the European Technological University EUt+, which brings together eight universities:
- Technical University – Sofia (Bulgaria)
- Cyprus University of Technology (Cyprus)
- Troyes University of Technology (France)
- Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (Germany)
- Technological University Dublin (Ireland)
- Riga Technical University (Latvia)
- Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania)
- Cartagena Polytechnic University (Spain).
The European Technological University EUt+ aims to raise the quality and competitiveness of higher technical education, and to make its students technologically literate professionals. For students at TU-Sofia, opportunities for study at various campuses and obtaining a unified European diploma are opening up. They will be able to study for at least two semesters at a partner university, using the latest infrastructure and research capacity. A joint European academic degree certificate will be issued – an additional certificate to the qualification of students who have completed joint programs of several higher education institutions. The next step towards building the so-called "European universities" is the acquisition of a European legal status, so that partners can make joint strategic decisions, develop joint curricula, and combine human, material, financial and scientific resources and capacity. TU-Sofia, as part of such a future university, will actively participate in these processes, because education and science are becoming increasingly international. The Technical University – Sofia encourages young people to choose a profession related to the modern development of technology and engineering, to ensure a successful career in science, economy and public administration, not only in the country, but also worldwide. The Technical University – Sofia looks forward to its new students, to impart knowledge and skills with which they can meet the challenges of today and tomorrow and build a modern, intelligent and innovative society.
