Prof. Dr. Milena Lazarova explained the higher education institution's policies regarding technologies
Artificial intelligence (AI) has existed for a long time. The Technical University - Sofia is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Over all these years, many changes have occurred - in technologies. The advent of artificial intelligence is something that the Technical University is strategically prepared to meet. This was stated by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Accreditation, Prof. Dr. Milena Lazarova, on "Bulgaria Morning".
She shared two directions of the university in this regard.
"On the one hand, these are rules, norms, and policies for the application of artificial intelligence in the university, which are in line with European and global regulations. On the other hand, it is important to support teachers and students. Artificial intelligence is a powerful, complex tool that is still developing. Here lies the role of the university to provide the value system according to which AI will be used," explained Prof. Lazarova on Bulgaria ON AIR.
"This year, we adopted policies that regulate both the academic and administrative staff, as well as students and doctoral students. Measures for the ethical use of AI are to be taken next, i.e., what is correct and how far is it correct. Artificial intelligence has been present at the Technical University for a long time. Since the 1990s, disciplines dealing with artificial intelligence have existed in the curricula and plans," she emphasized.
The first students studying the specialty "Intelligent Systems and Artificial Intelligence," which started a few years ago, are about to graduate.
"We have many other specialties where specific disciplines train students on how to use artificial intelligence. We have rich experience in scientific research. The university has active and rich scientific activities. The university implements scientific research. Artificial intelligence cannot replace teachers. It can be a tool that can be useful, but we must determine how far and in what way," summarized Prof. Lazarova.
The Technical University is participating in the construction of several large-scale projects - three centers of excellence and two competence centers.
