
Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and the Technical University in the capital have once again entered the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability. The 2026 higher education sustainability ranking includes 2002 universities from Europe, Asia, the Americas, Oceania, and Africa.
Sofia University has entered the ranking for the third time, scoring 58 points and taking 814th place worldwide, 312th out of 621 European higher education institutions, and 29th out of 90 educational institutions from Eastern Europe included. Last year, our oldest higher education institution held 749th place among the total 1743 ranked universities with 51.2 points.
The Technical University of Sofia is ranked in the 1501+ group this year. Last year, it was placed in the 1451–1500 range.
The ranking examines the commitments that universities worldwide demonstrate in their work towards sustainable development in addressing problems arising from climate change and their impact on the environment. The evaluation takes into account research in the field of science and technology in relation to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the social and environmental impact of higher education institutions as centers of education.
Universities are evaluated in three categories – environmental impact, social impact, and governance. Each category contains different performance indicators composed of individual metrics.
In this year's ranking, Sofia University takes 370th place in the "Good Governance" and "Governance" categories, 654th in "Knowledge Exchange", 677th in "Gender Equality", 728th in "Environmental Sustainability", 845th in "Social Impact", and 1025th in "Environmental Impact".
Leading the world with the maximum 100 points is Lund University (Sweden), which was third last year with 98.8 points. Second with 99.8 points is last year's leader – the University of Toronto (Canada), and third place with 99 points is held by University College London (United Kingdom).
The top ten also includes the University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom), the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada), the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Imperial College London, the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) in Australia, McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and the University of Manchester (United Kingdom).
