The Technical University – Sofia is celebrating its 80th anniversary. On October 24, 1945, the Higher Technical College, established in 1942, became the State Polytechnic with two faculties by law. Subsequently, in 1965, the State Polytechnic was renamed the Higher Machine and Electrical Engineering Institute – HMEI, which in 1995 was transformed into the Technical University – Sofia.
For 80 years, the Technical University – Sofia has been in continuous development, achieving peaks in engineering sciences, modern teaching methods, and a high-tech material base, which defines it as the largest and most prestigious technical university in Bulgaria and the region. It sets educational standards and national priorities for the development of technical, engineering education, and science in Bulgaria, and collaborates with over 100 foreign universities.
TU – Sofia is a leading research university in the country and is part of the European Technological University EUt+, which includes established European technical universities. TU – Sofia's membership in the EUt+ Alliance opens new horizons and places the university on the map of next-generation European higher education. This collaboration provides students, researchers, and faculty with the unique opportunity to study, teach, and conduct their scientific activities at any of the nine partner universities in Europe. Thus, the university helps its students and faculty become global citizens – with broad access to diverse academic cultures, scientific communities, innovative practices, and extensive opportunities for professional development.
The university maintains constant contact with industry. Representatives of leading international companies participate in the development of current curricula and programs and are invited as guest lecturers. In this way, the educational process meets the real needs of business. Its graduates succeed not only as excellent and sought-after employees but also as entrepreneurs and innovators – drivers of contemporary technological change.
A source of pride for TU – Sofia are over 170,000 engineers, scientists, and managers who studied at the university. They built the Bulgarian industry and today continue to develop modern, innovative sectors of the economy, successfully building careers in the country and abroad. Many of them are world-renowned scientists and statesmen, dedicated to science and the prosperity of their country.
The Technical University – Sofia achieves all this thanks to its thousands of teachers, scientists, and staff, who over these 80 years have diligently and devotedly worked in the name of science, the development of technical progress, for the benefit of society and peoples.
The Technical University – Sofia will continue to establish itself as a leading European educational, scientific, and research center.
