The University of Library Studies and Information Technologies (ULSIT) - Sofia hosted a seminar on the topic "The Path of Innovation: Introduction to Patents and the Unified Patent System", organized by the Patent Office in partnership with the European Patent Office, the national institution reported. The training took place on November 17 and brought together over 150 students from ULSIT-Sofia and the Technical University - Sofia in the "Ceremonial Hall" and Auditorium 106, connected via video conference.
Greetings to the participants were delivered by Maya Filipova-Demireva, Deputy Chairman of the Patent Office, Prof. Dr. Tereza Trencheva, Deputy Rector for Research and International Activities at ULSIT, and Prof. Dr. Eng. Stefan Stefanov, Chairman of the Intellectual Property Commission at TU-Sofia.
In her address, Maya Filipova-Demireva emphasized that the training is part of the institution's efforts to promote a culture of innovation and represents a valuable opportunity for young people to learn about the mechanisms through which ideas become protected inventions with recognized value in Bulgaria and the European Union. She expressed gratitude to ULSIT and personally to Prof. Trencheva for their consistent support and active work in promoting the importance of intellectual property among students.
Prof. Tereza Trencheva thanked for the partnership and shared that following the success of the Startup Fair held during the week, it is completely logical for ULSIT to host a seminar dedicated to patents and innovation.
Prof. Stefan Stefanov recalled that exactly a year ago, the Patent Office organized a seminar at TU-Sofia, which was attended by students from five universities, including a large group from ULSIT. He emphasized that this year, representatives from the German Faculty of TU-Sofia were also among the active participants.
"The Patent as an Engine of Innovation: From Scientific Discovery to Protected Invention" was presented by Galya Aigurova, Director of the Directorate "Expertise and Protection of Inventions, Utility Models, and Industrial Designs".
State experts from the Patent Office also participated in the program, presenting topics related to utility models and the Unified Patent System. The European Patent Office's initiative for the Young Inventors Prize was also presented. This prestigious award honors young innovators under the age of 30 whose inventions contribute significantly to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The Patent Office of the Republic of Bulgaria has signed Memoranda of Partnership with ULSIT and the Technical University. Through joint training on industrial property, the aim is to expand the prospects for students by showing them how the strategic protection of inventions and innovations supports economic growth and technological progress.
The event concluded with the awarding of certificates to the participants of the training.
