For these past 80 years in its history, the Technical University (TU) in Sofia has successfully trained over 170,000 engineers who work for the development of Bulgaria, for its rise, as well as for the well-being of the Bulgarian people. This was stated by the rector of the higher education institution, Prof. Dr. Georgi Venkov, at the ceremonial opening of the 80th academic year 2025/2026 at TU-Sofia. For the 80th consecutive time, the new academic year is being opened at the Technical University (TU) in Sofia, noted the rector, and he addressed the first-year students with the words that today they are crossing the threshold of the largest and most prestigious Technical University not only in Bulgaria, but also in this part of Europe. Today, you become part of the so-called engineering elite of the nation, added Prof. Venkov.
Just four years from now, upon completing the educational and qualification level of 'bachelor', or after five years, upon completing the master's degree, you, as students, will receive a diploma that I am firmly convinced will play the most decisive role in your future professional development and your realization in the labor market. This is not just a diploma for higher education, a document with a photo, signature, and seal, but a diploma issued by TU in Sofia. And it is highly valued, and recognizable by your future employers in Bulgaria and around the world, said the rector to the first-year students.
Prof. Georgi Venkov noted that students at the Technical University study the technologies of the future, which are related to quantum computers, artificial intelligence, nuclear energy, biotechnology, and many others. It is precisely you, the future engineers, who have the enormous responsibility to maintain the fragile balance between progress and the preservation of humanity, because an engineer is not just a profession, but also a promise to the future, said the rector of TU in Sofia.
At the ceremony, it was again noted that this is the 80th academic year starting at TU in Sofia. It is the oldest and largest technical higher education institution in Bulgaria, where over 11,000 students are currently studying.
Among those present at the ceremonial event were the Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Acad. Nikolai Vitanov, the Ambassador of Morocco in our country, Zakia El Midaoui, representatives of the embassies of Germany and France in our country, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TU-Sofia, Vasil Velev, who is also the Chairman of the General Assembly of the Association of Industrial Capital in Bulgaria (AICB), the rectors of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" Prof. Dr. Georgi Valkov, of the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy Prof. Dr. Engineer Senya Terzieva-Zhelyazkova, of the University of Mining and Geology Prof. Dr. Engineer Ivelin Koprrev, of the University of Forestry Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristo Mihaylov, the Deputy Commander of the Military Academy "Georgi S. Rakovski" Col. Dr. Anton Bankov, former rectors of the Technical University, the rector's leadership, faculty, and students.
As BTA reported, TU Sofia is the oldest and leading technical higher education institution in the country and the region, a recognizable European university, and a sought-after partner in Bulgaria and worldwide. The university is increasingly preferred by young people because it offers modern interdisciplinary programs in the most innovative and dynamically developing fields of science and technology, such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analysis, intelligent systems, information and communication technologies, aviation engineering and aerospace engineering, autonomous vehicles, digital industrial technologies, automation, electronics, mechatronics, electrical engineering and energy, business information systems, and others. Training with the participation of business representatives is particularly useful, as it allows students to familiarize themselves with the latest technologies and gain practical experience in a real-world environment.
The Technical University of Sofia is part of the European Technological University EUt+. It brings together nine universities from different countries on our continent and will soon become a confederal university, where students will be trained on a cluster basis under joint programs but in different campuses and will receive a single European diploma.
The European Technological University was established within the framework of the "Erasmus+" program call for 2020 and is an alliance of nine European technological universities in nine countries, each with its own campuses, which together educate 100,000 students.
