At the Technical University (TU) in Sofia, generations of engineers, scientists, and leaders are formed, who are at the forefront of the development of the economy and technologies in our country. This was stated today by the Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Acad. Nikolai Vitanov, in his speech at the opening of the 80th academic year 2025/2026 at TU-Sofia.
He noted that the Technical University of Sofia is a symbol of high standards in engineering education and scientific research. It is a research university that has always been a source of knowledge, innovation, and inspiration, combining the traditions of Bulgarian
technical education with the latest global achievements.
Deputy Minister Vitanov also addressed the first-year students, telling them that they had chosen a university that would give them not only knowledge and skills but also values - responsibility, creativity, and a drive for improvement. Be persistent, curious, inquisitive, and open to the new, because your future depends on it, he wished them.
Today, the world is changing rapidly, and the challenges of digitalization, artificial intelligence, green transformation, quantum technologies, and many others require new knowledge and solutions from you. I am convinced that the Technical University will continue to be the driving force behind these processes in Bulgaria and to prepare its graduates for a worthy place in the global world, said Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Academician Nikolai Vitanov.
Over the past 80 years of its history, the Technical University (TU) in Sofia has successfully trained over 170,000 engineers who work for the development of Bulgaria, its rise, and the well-being of the Bulgarian people. This was stated by the rector of the higher education institution, Prof. Dr. Georgi Venkov, at the ceremonial opening of the 80th academic year 2025/2026 at TU-Sofia.
Among those present at the ceremony were also the Ambassador of Morocco to Bulgaria Zakiya El Midaoui, representatives of the embassies of Germany and France in Bulgaria, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TU-Sofia Vasil Velev, who is the Chairman of the General Assembly of the Association of Industrial Capital in Bulgaria (AICB), the rectors of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" Prof. Dr. Georgi Valchev, of the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy Prof. Dr. Engineer Senya Terzieva-Zhelyazkova, of the University of Mining and Geology Prof. Dr. Engineer Ivelin Koprrev, of the University of Forestry Assoc. Rakovski" Colonel Dr. Anton Bankov, former rectors of the Technical University, the rectorate leadership, faculty members, and students.
I want to congratulate the students and first-year students for the choice they have made to study at TU-Sofia, said Vasil Velev. He noted that in the future, the most needed people will be future engineers. It is difficult to become a good engineer, and use your time to acquire knowledge and develop your natural intelligence. We expect you in enterprises even during your studies - for internships and practices, with these words Vasil Velev addressed the students of the Technical University.
At the ceremony, it was again noted that this is the 80th academic year starting at TU in Sofia. It is the oldest and largest technical higher education institution in Bulgaria, where over 11,000 students are currently enrolled. TU in Sofia has 17 faculties, including those with English, German, and French language programs. All faculties offer training for over 250 accredited programs for bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.
As BTA reported, the Technical University in Sofia is part of the European Technological University EUt+. It unites nine universities from different countries on our continent and will in the future become a confederal university, where students will be trained on a cluster basis through common programs but in different campuses and will receive a single European diploma.
The European Technological University was established within the framework of the call for the "Erasmus+" program for 2020 and is an alliance of nine European technological universities in nine countries, each with its own campuses, which together train 100,000 students.
