
We are launching a special academic year - special because the 80th anniversary of the Technical University – Sofia is being celebrated, a tradition worthy of respect, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Nikola Shakev, director of the Technical University's branch in Plovdiv, told BTA.
Today we are also welcoming the 40th consecutive graduating class of the Plovdiv branch, and next year we will mark the 40th anniversary of its establishment, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Shakev specified.
"We also have a new master's specialization this academic year – "Innovative Technologies in Defense." It is a continuation of the good traditions that the Plovdiv branch has in training personnel for the military-industrial complex. The specialization is extremely relevant, and its preparation took more than a year. The program includes specialists from practice, as well as foreign lecturers," he pointed out.
According to him, the new specialization is aimed at engineers who already have at least a bachelor's degree but wish to enhance their knowledge with a one-year study program and specialize in the field of defense technologies. Currently, document admission is ongoing, Assoc. Prof. Shakev specified. He added that classes for full-time bachelor's students begin today, for master's students – in two weeks, and later for part-time students as well.
"Today is an exciting and significant day – the beginning of the new academic year at the Technical University. This is a time of new opportunities, new challenges, and new dreams. First, I want to warmly welcome all newly admitted students. Welcome to our academic family. You have chosen the path to knowledge and mastering the most modern technologies. I believe that the future of our region, of Bulgaria, and of the world lies in your hands. Here, at the Technical University, you have the unique opportunity to meet exceptional specialists, exchange ideas, and create friendships that you will cherish for a lifetime," Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Nikola Shakev also said in his welcome address.
He emphasized the university's rich history and established reputation, built on high-quality education, cutting-edge scientific research, and applied developments. He recalled that this year the Technical University – Sofia is celebrating its 80th anniversary – an anniversary behind which stand countless achievements, thousands of realized engineers, an entire era of Bulgaria's industrial development, and many human destinies that found professional and personal growth.
The director also drew attention to the university's social role: "We know – Plovdiv is a city with deep historical and cultural value, a city that remembers its past and confidently looks to the future. It is an active economic and industrial center, a place of events and ideas. I want to assure you that the Technical University also makes its significant contribution to this development –"

By tradition, the director handed over the student ID cards to the first-year students admitted with the highest scores. This year, over 400 first-year students will study regularly at the branch of the Technical University – Sofia in Plovdiv, and more than 100 have chosen the part-time form. The academic management announced that 100% of the state enrollment plan has been fulfilled in all 12 regular and 4 part-time specialties.
Representatives of the state and local authorities, rectors of higher education institutions in the city, high school directors, and university partners attended the ceremony for the opening of the academic year.
