For another year, the TUS Team from TU-Sofia achieved a podium finish in the energy-efficient car competition "Shell Eco-marathon Europe and Africa 2025". The high distinction is in the category of urban-type cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The competition took place on the "Silesia Ring" track in Poland, from June 10 to 15, TU-Sofia announced.
More than a hundred teams participated in the competition in various categories, with a traditional presence of universities from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, and Turkey, TU-Sofia noted.
Before the competition, the team successfully overcame difficulties during the technical inspection and the heightened safety requirements from the technical commissars. In the energy efficiency competition, the team tested different strategies with its two drivers, achieving three successful attempts out of five in total. Each attempt required completing 11 laps with a total length of 14.5 km in no more than 35 minutes. The best result was achieved during the second track outing with a performance of 176.4 km/m3 of hydrogen. Unfortunately, the reduced efficiency of the fuel cell and the rising track temperatures did not allow for improvement in the final attempts, the university added.
The podium finish in the main competition allowed the team to participate in the speed competition under the name regional championship, where the nine best urban cars compete, three from each energy category. The TU-Sofia car performed successfully, finishing third in the qualification and fifth in the regional championship race. Following the successful performance, the team is motivated to continue working on improving the car for next year's competition, TU-Sofia also wrote.
