At the Technical University (TU) in Sofia, as of June 9, 2025, 993 foreign students are enrolled, of whom 109 are from European Union countries, Sylvia Borislavova, Head of the Academic Department at TU-Sofia, told BTA.
Students in the various educational and qualification degree categories come from 45 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, and South America.
Foreign students at TU-Sofia are enrolled in the following professional directions: direction 5.3 "Communications and Computer Engineering", major "Computer Science and Engineering"; direction 5.13 "General Engineering", majors - "Mechanical Engineering", "Mechatronic Systems", "Industrial Engineering", "Engineering Design", "Industrial Management", "Intelligent Systems and Artificial Intelligence"; direction 5.2 "Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation", major "Electrical Engineering"; direction 5.5 "Transport, Shipping and Aviation", majors - "Aviation Engineering", "Aerospace Engineering"; direction 3.7 "Administration and Management", major "Business Administration"; direction 4.5 "Mathematics", major "Applied Mathematics and Informatics"; direction 4.6 "Informatics and Computer Science", major "Informatics and Software Science".
In response to the question of whether TU-Sofia has majors that are preferred by foreign students, Borislavova stated that applicants mainly apply for majors taught in English - "Computer Science and Engineering", "Industrial Engineering", "Mechanical Engineering", "Mechatronic Systems", "Aviation Engineering", "Aerospace Engineering", "Electrical Engineering", "Intelligent Systems and Artificial Intelligence".
According to her, this year there has been a significant increase in the number of foreign students, which is evident in the dedicated groups for specialized and language preparation in English and Bulgarian. During the 2024/2025 academic year, five preparatory groups were created for students wishing to study majors in English, whereas in 2023/2024 there were only two. Currently, 83 foreign students are enrolled in the five preparatory groups. The same applies to the Bulgarian language group, which consists of two subgroups, while last academic year there was only one. Twenty-one foreign students are preparing for majors taught in Bulgarian. Applications are also accepted for the winter semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. Based on preliminary forecasts from the "Foreign Students" sector and compared to the same period last academic year, a larger number of foreign students are expected to choose TU-Sofia next year, Sylvia Borislavova said.
When asked whether tuition fees alone attract the interest of foreign students in Bulgaria, or if they are also interested in the quality of our higher education, the head of the Academic Department explained that TU-Sofia is among the leading universities in Bulgaria and has a good reputation both in the country and abroad. The university offers a variety of programs in English, which are aimed at foreign students. This includes master's, bachelor's, and doctoral programs in fields such as computer science, electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, and other promising disciplines.
Students can participate in research projects, incubators, and startup programs, which motivates them to choose the university. The programs offered by TU-Sofia in English, French, and German follow the modern development of science and technology and meet the requirements of the labor market. Graduates of TU-Sofia are sought-after professionals by both Bulgarian and foreign companies. TU-Sofia partners with higher education institutions and educational organizations in Europe and beyond, and also offers opportunities for exchange and internships abroad. This is a great advantage for students who want to gain additional international experience for their career, explained Sylvia Borislavova.
