More than fifty of the largest employers in the country participated in this year's edition of the "Internships" forum, which took place today at the branch of the Technical University in the city of Plovdiv.
"Internships" forum is one of the most significant and popular events of the year, along with "Career Days" in the autumn. This year's, the 13th consecutive edition, enjoys increased interest – we have a total of over 180 companies that expressed a desire to participate and have joined the forum editions across the country. It is traditionally organized in the spring, usually in April, with Tuesday being in Sofia, Wednesday reserved for Plovdiv, and from this year, Thursday will also be in Sliven, as the Technical University (TU) – Sofia has branches with a significant number of students in these two cities. This was stated to BTA by Prof. Dr. Eng. Lidia Galbova, Deputy Rector for "International Activities and Integration" at the Faculty of Economics of TU - Sofia.
"At today's forum, I spoke with several company representatives who proudly stated and thanked us by specific names for our students who have completed one or two internships with them and have now successfully become their staff," she added.
According to her, students find employment in research units or research sectors of companies, with many of them already holding leading managerial positions.
"I can confidently say that around 60, perhaps even more, of the engineers in all enterprises operating within the country, both Bulgarian and foreign, are graduates of the Technical University - Sofia. The great interest in the forum for us is an attestation and a clear indicator that our students are highly sought after. This is also a very important message to our future applicants that they will find employment," pointed out Prof. Dr. Eng. Galbova.
According to her, the negative trend from the 90s of graduates not finding professional employment in their field of study is no longer felt, and currently, there is high demand for human capital from both Bulgarian and international companies.
"Our cooperation does not end here. We work in close collaboration with many enterprises regarding our training programs. They themselves participate as guest lecturers or consultants, thereby providing valuable guidance so that bachelor's and master's programs meet business needs and keep pace with modern trends and technologies. The personnel we prepare fully meet business requirements," clarified Prof. Dr. Eng. Galbova.
According to her, interest from students is also increasing. "This is a two-way process between industry and business representatives and our students, because many of them show interest in starting their professional careers while still studying. We encourage this and show great understanding".
She pointed out that especially in the final years and during master's studies, many students work with companies on joint projects, which is extremely important and interesting for them. This gives students the opportunity to work on a real problem and solve something practical that will have future real-world applications. This serves as motivation for their future career prospects. Many of them subsequently decide to establish their own companies.
"Many of the successful graduates of the Technical University are managers of leading Bulgarian and foreign companies or hold executive positions within these organizations. This is something we are very proud of – the fact that graduates have guaranteed professional employment, often in well-paid positions, unlike in the past when, unfortunately, many of them considered careers abroad. This is very important for those who choose to study in the country. There are now many excellent opportunities for career development in Bulgaria," she added.
According to her, the "Internships" Forum is a valuable opportunity for students to meet leading companies, find suitable internships, and apply their knowledge in a real-world environment. This allows them to complement their theoretical knowledge with practical skills and to orient themselves regarding their career development and professional growth. "I would like to thank the business representatives for their partnership and support, because together with them we are developing numerous new curricula and programs, creating modern laboratories, and ensuring the preparation and growth of excellent engineers ready to face the challenges of our times," added Prof. Dr. Eng. Galbova.
Companies from various industrial sectors presented their internship programs, open job positions, and opportunities for professional development during the forum today.
Students had the opportunity to conduct on-site interviews, which helps them navigate the labor market, gain valuable experience in the application process, and assess their chances for a successful career.
We have been partnering with the Technical University - Sofia and the Plovdiv branch for many years, and we are pleased to participate again in the "Internships" Forum. This is a great opportunity for us to present our scholarship and internship programs to students. This was stated by Vesela Kuzova from the Human Resources Department of ABB-Bulgaria, a participant in this year's edition of the forum, to BTA.
"Every year we open internship positions in all our locations across different fields, so we have the opportunity to welcome students who have chosen various engineering specialties, as well as more administrative ones. Regarding the scholarship program, we are also proud that we have the opportunity to award scholarships to students who have chosen engineering specialties," Kuzova added, who is also the coordinator of the program.
She added that the application period for the ABB Foundation "Jürgen Dormann" scholarship program for engineering education is currently open. This program provides scholarships to students with excellent academic achievements who need financial support to continue their studies.
