The Center of Competence in the field of integrated circuits was opened today at the Technical University – Sofia, announced the Ministry of Innovations and Growth (MIG) on its official page. The Center is part of the "Chips for Europe" initiative, supported by the European Chips Act and the Digital Europe Programme.
Among the project's objectives are to ensure access to design platforms, pilot production lines, and simulation environments, training and retraining of specialists in the field of microelectronics, support for small and medium-sized enterprises and startups in the sector through access to resources, mentoring, and funding, creating sustainable links between academia, business, and the public sector, specialization in areas such as integrated circuit design, MEMS, modern packaging methods (processes in the production of electronic components - ed. note).
Researchers and technological organizations and academic institutions will also be among the users of the center.
The opening of the center and its first introductory meeting took place in the presence of the two Deputy Ministers of Innovations and Growth, Georgi Angelov and Martin Danovski.
With the establishment of the National Center of Competence in the field of integrated circuits, Bulgaria has all the chances in the coming years to boast of improving the high-tech environment. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Innovations and Growth, Georgi Angelov. He pointed out that every EU member state has such a center, with a total of 30 in Europe.
According to him, the Bulgarian center is distinguished by the fact that it includes foreign partners.
The Center will bring together leading Bulgarian academic and scientific institutions – the Technical University – Sofia, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", the Technical Universities in Gabrovo and Varna, the University of Ruse "Angel Kanchev", the Institute of Electronics, and the Institute of Solid State Physics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Industrial partners are Sofia Tech Park, the Association for Scientific Research and Development, and international organizations such as "imec-Belgium" (Imec–Belgium) and "Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf-Germany" (Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf –Germany).
Georgi Angelov reminded that mechatronics and microelectronics are among the priorities in the Smart Specialization Strategy of Bulgaria. Defined sub-areas include: integrated circuit design, machine manufacturing, attracting expertise, and establishing production in the field of packaging. According to him, our country is currently negotiating cooperation with leading companies in these areas.
