Bulgarian and international companies train students at TU Sofia, stated Lidia Galbova. There is a significant gap between the needs of the economy and the workforce provided by school graduates. The most sought-after are construction engineers, nurses, and in the next 5 years, there will be a shortage of IT specialists involved in development and training in artificial intelligence, as well as specialists in the fields of electronics and mechanics.
How does the Technical University respond to the demands and needs of the business?
"The Technical University in Sofia is a research university - the teachers are also researchers, people who not only keep up with the latest developments in science and technology but also participate in the creation of new technologies and innovations. In recent years, TU Sofia has introduced cybersecurity, aerospace engineering, intelligent systems, innovative management, smart city management, and smart homes in line with labor market needs - the university collaborates directly with the industry," stated the Deputy Rector of the Technical University, Lidia Galbova, in the special discussion of Bulgaria ON AIR "The Future: Education and Innovations".
She emphasized that many representatives of Bulgarian and international companies participate in the training of students at the higher education institution.
Loss of human capital
2 million people between 20 and 50 years old, many of whom graduated from Bulgarian educational institutions, find employment abroad.
"With this trend, I do not think the blame lies with higher education, but unfortunately, they seek employment abroad," the guest emphasized.
TU Sofia receives funding through the PUV as a research university. Over 20 foreign scientists have been attracted as researchers, some of whom wish to remain as teachers.
Lidiya Galabova pointed out that 1/3 of the funding for scientific activities comes from orders by Bulgarian and international companies.
Narrow specialists
She stated that just as there are professions of the future, there are also endangered specialties that will not disappear or should disappear.
"There is a risk in the energy and nuclear energy sector. Companies are coming into this field, there is work, if work starts now - there is perfect pay under brilliant working conditions for the next 40 years. But young people look at what is modern and is popularized," Galabova explained.
