Today, the student anthem "Gaudeamus igitur" sounded again in the courtyard of the Technical University – Plovdiv branch.
At a ceremonial event, 176 bachelors and masters received their diplomas from the Faculty of Electronics and Automation of the higher education institution. According to the assessment of the teachers and the management of the Technical University – Plovdiv branch, the graduating class of 2023 performed very well during their studies, as evidenced by the fact that there are 32 top students in the class.
By decision of the academic management, six of the graduates also receive a gold medal, and five others receive a silver medal. The absolute top student of the faculty is Master of Engineering Nikolay Kolev from the "Electrical Engineering" specialty, who graduated with a perfect score of 6.00. Among the bachelors, the title "Top Student of the Class" was awarded to Marlen Dimitrova from the "Industrial Engineering" specialty with an excellent score of 5.90.
In total, there are 395 graduates in the class of 2023. So far – 35 years after the establishment of the Plovdiv branch of the Technical University – the higher education institution has trained 12,115 engineers and computer scientists, 6,367 of whom graduated from the "Electronics and Automation" faculty.
Where are the engineers going
The Director of the Technical University – Plovdiv branch, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nikola Shakev shared that the students of the graduating class of 2023 had a rather difficult study period due to COVID restrictions on in-person education. On the other hand, this brought additional skills to students and teachers in an electronic environment, commented Assoc. Prof. Shakev. According to him, the graduating students have very good career prospects, because in recent years the Bulgarian economy has been experiencing a shortage of engineers and specialists with technical education.
The shortage of engineers is also changing the strategy of companies, and they are increasingly partnering with the Technical University – Plovdiv branch, providing it with the most modern equipment and technologies for the laboratories where future engineers will be trained. Our students receive support from the industry throughout their entire studies, and this is very important for their career development, concluded Assoc. Prof. Shakev.
At the graduation ceremony, seven major national and regional companies visited, having prepared gifts for the most successful graduates. The director of one of the energy-related companies stated that he was ready to sign an employment contract right there and then with graduates of the Technical University – Plovdiv Branch.
Where do the top students go
We contacted some of the best students from the 2023 graduating class. However, we were unable to speak with the top graduate of the Master's program from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Instrumentation, Haralambos Theodoridis. The reason – immediately after graduation, he was called up for service in the Greek army.
Engineer Valentina Babarova is #1 in her graduating class among bachelor's students. She graduated with the specialty "Design and Print Communications" with an excellent grade of 5.80. "I immediately started working in a large printing house in Plovdiv as a process engineer for offset printing machines," shares the top student. "I will probably continue my studies for a master's degree, but for now, I am pausing to focus on my work. I feel very good in the academic environment of the university. It was valuable to me that the professors wanted to know our opinion on a given issue and our justifications – whether they were correct or incorrect. They helped with guidance, rather than just giving us the answer and saying: this is the right one, the other doesn't make sense." – explained Eng. Babarova.
Engineer Marlen Dimitrova won the title of "Top Graduate" of her class with an excellent grade of 5.90. She is already the third generation of engineers and confidently upholds the tradition of her family ancestors. She believes that engineering is "instilled" in her. "The Technical University – Plovdiv Branch gave me not only a prestigious profession, but during my studies, I was blessed with a family, and together with my husband, we are enjoying our first child. We are currently in Germany, where we are responsible for relocating a high-tech medical optics company to Bulgaria. This is a company that will produce the most important optical components for Da Vinci medical robots. I highly value that 90 percent of the professors are not only teachers to us but also friends. I know that in the future, I will be able to seek their help when I have engineering problems to solve in my work." – concluded Eng. Marlen Dimitrova.
