On March 28, the Local Commission for Combating Human Trafficking (LCCHT) held a discussion forum on the topic "Prevention of human trafficking for labor exploitation and illegal cross-border hiring of people," with students from the Technical University of Sofia, Engineering-Pedagogical Faculty – Sliven.
Vladimir Drumev, secretary of the LCCHT-Sliven, familiarized participants with the crime of human trafficking, emphasizing the methods of involvement in labor exploitation and the mechanisms for manipulating and controlling the victims.
Within the framework of the discussion, real cases of human trafficking for labor exploitation and illegal cross-border hiring of people for seasonal or temporary work in the agricultural sector were discussed, where workers are attracted with promises of high pay for low-paid, low-skilled, and intensive work.
The analysis shows that many Bulgarian citizens have unrealistic expectations about life abroad and trust dubious job offers that reach them through relatives and acquaintances, including via the internet.
According to the latest data from the European Commission, human trafficking for labor exploitation has affected 28% of registered victims within the European Union. Victims are exploited in the sectors of agriculture and forestry, construction, industrial production, restaurants, hotels, entertainment, caregiving, cleaning and household services, fishing, retail, and transport.
