Jesús Caballero, Chief Executive Officer of SOF Connect - the operator of Sofia Airport, delivered a lecture to second-year students in aviation engineering specialties at the Technical University. The lecture is part of the initiatives outlined in the cooperation agreement signed between the university and the capital airport operator at the end of last year.
During the lecture, future aviation engineers were introduced to current trends and challenges in aviation. This is one of the fastest-growing economic sectors globally – at any given minute, there are 11,000 aircraft in the air. Industry expectations are
the number of air passengers is expected to nearly double over the next 10 years compared to the pre-pandemic 2019 level, reaching 7.2 billion passengers.
Jesús Caballero also focused on environmental protection. Although aviation accounts for only 2.5% of total carbon dioxide emissions, the industry is investing significant resources in finding alternative energy sources and transport solutions to mitigate its impact on the climate – for example, the development of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) taxis. IATA's (International Air Transport Association) strategy
air transport) for carbon neutrality by 2050 envisages that 65% of them will come from the use of sustainable aviation fuel.
"In line with global trends, we have set in
its strategy of full decarbonization by 2036, and sustainable aviation fuel is a key part of the process and the future of the sector. The industry must continue to invest in environmentally friendly technologies that reduce the impact on the environment while maintaining high standards of safety and service quality,” Jesus Caballero told the students.
During the presentation, he highlighted the implementation of artificial intelligence and the digitalization of airport processes. Jesus emphasized how technological innovations play a key role in more efficient and secure management of operations. The collaboration between Sofia Airport operator and the Technical University involves the development of a joint internship program, with the participation of experts.
