

The most common professional fields in Bulgarian universities are "Economics", "Pedagogy", "Medicine", "Administration and Management", "Pedagogy of Training in ...", "Communications and Computer Engineering", "Informatics and Computer Science", and "Law". More than half of the students nationwide are enrolled in these fields. This is shown by the data from the National Map of Higher Education, which was updated this week by the Council of Ministers. We discuss the novelties for 2024 at the Technical University of Sofia, Plovdiv Branch with the director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nikola Shakev. He was elected to the position in December, and his mandate program will focus on digitalization, as well as the development of new specialties, including "intelligent systems and artificial intelligence". Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Nikola Shakev was born in 1974 in Plovdiv. He graduated from the Mathematical Gymnasium in the city, and then from the Technical University of Sofia, Plovdiv Branch. Since 2006, he has been a lecturer at the Department of Control Systems, and in the last two terms, he also held the position of Deputy Director of the branch. He is the author of more than 70 scientific publications, with interests in the field of intelligent control systems, robot and manipulator control, and the development of algorithms for training artificial neural networks. He is the scientific advisor to the university's robotics club. In his mandate program, Assoc. Prof. Shakev foresees the modernization of curricula in accordance with technological development, conducting scientific research and new developments, updating the material base for both teaching and research activities. The Technical University of Sofia, Plovdiv Branch is to become a regional center for technology and competence transfer, while continuing to prepare highly qualified engineering staff to meet the growing demand for specialists in the region, as foreseen by the newly elected director. Assoc. Prof. Shakev will work with a team of three deputy directors: Prof. Vaelo Nikolov – Deputy Director for "Teaching Activities and Academic Staff", Assoc. Prof. Nikolaiakanakov – for "Scientific Activities and Electronic Resources", and Assoc. Prof. Hristian Panayotov – for "International Activities and Integration".
