The EUt+ Ideas Institute Brain Trust held an expert panel on technology, ecology, and sustainability today at the Technical University of Sofia. The forum coincided with the multimedia event of the subsidiary project EthiCo, which focuses on ethics and ecology in technological education.Participants in the event included students and scientists, among them Prof. Georgi Todorov (TUS), Prof. Denitsa Zgureva (TUS), Prof. Noel Fitzpatrick (Dublin), Prof. Liudiya Galabova (TUS), Karina Angelieva (Ministry of Energy), as well as Doncho Barbakov – Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Sofia. The challenges and opportunities of technology in the context of ecology and sustainability were discussed, Barbakov reported. "As a representative of the Municipality of Sofia, I shared with the audience that local government, which is closest to the people, is aware of the specific requirements and needs of citizens. The population of a city like Sofia consists of the most diverse groups of people, who accordingly have diverse demands. Local government must inform and explain the necessity of introducing new technologies in city management and infrastructure. This is happening slowly and step by step, but it is extremely important for the entire city and the country as a whole," he stated categorically. As an example of such innovations, Doncho Barbakov pointed to the low-emission zones in Sofia, as well as the ban on the use of solid fuel for heating in the city. "The Municipality of Sofia, together with the state, is actively working to use alternative energy sources, such as gas and electricity, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere," he recalled. "The Municipality of Sofia is developing strategic documents ensuring continuity in the work on policies that are vital for the city. These include the "Vision for Sofia", which provides a horizon for the city's development until 1950, the Integrated Development Plan of the Municipality of Sofia until 2027 (Sofia Program), as well as the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Sofia until 2035," the deputy mayor stated categorically.
