Students from the "Aviation Technology and Engineering" specialization at the Technical University in Plovdiv are showing increasing interest in unmanned aerial vehicles. Future aviation engineers believe that drones have an underdeveloped potential for widespread application. The aviation specialization has been studied by over 80 students at bachelor's and master's levels. During their classes, they also study the history of the first Bulgarian unmanned aerial vehicles produced in Plovdiv 50 years ago. Some of the students
choose to undertake an internship with their lecturer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Stoyan Avramov, who owns a company producing jet drones flying at speeds of 450 km/h. "We can build a prototype of a Bulgarian drone in about half a year to a year," believes Dr. Eng. Stoyan Avramov. He and his team have been producing flying jet targets for training Bulgarian and foreign fighter pilots and anti-aircraft artillery operators for years. Based on this jet target, Eng. Avramov and his team are already developing an unmanned aerial vehicle used for surveillance and reconnaissance. These drones have lower speeds but can fly for over 12 hours without recharging. The Bulgarian unmanned aerial vehicle is competitive in Eastern European and Balkan markets, with its price largely determined by the size of the payload it must carry. "I am convinced that we at the Technical University – Plovdiv branch will continue to work in the field of civil aviation, including with
unmanned aerial vehicles. As a scientist, I believe that civil aviation is a much larger niche for the development of unmanned aerial vehicles compared to military aviation. I hope that the state and the military will invest in the Bulgarian potential for sustainable development of our military-industrial complex. Some were quick to label the drone as 'aviation for the poor' and were mistaken. It turned out to be 'aviation for the smart,'" summarized the university lecturer.
