In the international ranking, the best performers are the Medical University - Sofia, Sofia University, and the Medical University in Plovdiv. A new ranking of universities, prepared by the Spanish research organization SCImago, was announced by BTA. In it, the Medical University in Sofia holds the highest position among Bulgarian higher education institutions. The ranking is published on the organization's website. The SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) of research institutions worldwide has been prepared since 2009 by the organization that unites the Spanish National Research Council, the University of Granada, the Carlos III University in Madrid, the University of Alcalá, the University of Extremadura, and other educational institutions in Spain. A total of 4126 scientific institutions, including 688 universities, are included in the 2021 ranking. For universities, it evaluates factors related to research activity, innovation, and impact on society. The Medical University in Sofia is ranked 513th in the world in the general university ranking and is the best represented among Bulgarian higher education institutions. It is followed by Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski," which is ranked 524th in the global ranking. In third place is the Medical University in Plovdiv (546th in the general ranking), followed by Thracian University in Stara Zagora (555th), Plovdiv University "St. Paisius Hilendarski" (562nd), University of Food Technologies in Plovdiv (566th), University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy in Sofia (567th), University of Forestry in Sofia (581st), Technical University in Sofia (622nd). The tenth place among Bulgarian universities and 626th in the world list are shared by the University "Prof. Asen Zlatarov" in Burgas and South-West University "Neofit Rilski" in Blagoevgrad. They are followed by Ruse University (641st) and Technical University in Varna (650th). The top five places in the university ranking go to Harvard University, USA, the Harvard Medical School, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, Stanford University, USA, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
