The well-known Bulgarian scientist and inventor associated with China, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Stoyan Gishin, was among those awarded by Bulgarian President Rumen Radev a few days ago for his new patents and utility models in the field of batteries and metal recycling in 2020, Radio China reported. He works jointly with his colleagues from the Technological University in the city of Ningbo. The scientist is also listed in the "Golden Book of Bulgarian Inventors" with his 29 inventions. Together with his Chinese colleagues from Ningbo, he actively contributes to the creation of an International Network of academic institutions in the field of higher education, scientific research, and innovation with representatives from almost all countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and China, as well as an Alliance (headquartered in Ningbo) of engineering universities from China and CEE countries. Specifically for KMG, Prof. Stoyan Gishin shares his impressions of the joint cooperation with colleagues from the PRC in the fields in which he works, providing some specific examples.
Q. Assoc. Prof. Gishin, please tell us more about your work, the inventions and projects you have been working on for years and for which you received the highest recognition from Bulgarian President Rumen Radev?
A. The essence of the innovative solutions developed by me and my team is related to the electrical processes in industrial electro-technologies for the production of various batteries and accumulators, charging devices for electric vehicles, forklifts, and other electric vehicles, electro-extraction of metals from electrolytic solutions, lead waste from scrapped batteries. The innovations we work on save over 20% of electricity consumption, reduce battery production time by more than twice, and significantly limit the impact on nature. Previous tests, conducted according to EU and Chinese standards, show that the starting capacity and nominal capacity of various elements and starter batteries are significantly increased.
Q. You are well known and work jointly with your colleagues from the Technological University in the Chinese city of Ningbo. Please tell us more about the meetings and cooperation with your Chinese colleagues.
A. Since 2014, the Technical University - Sofia has been intensively developing international cooperation with the Ningbo University of Technology (P.R. China), for which Prof. Dr. Wang Bo - now Director of the CEEC Institute, and Prof. Dr. Hristo Hristov from TU-Sofia were extremely helpful. Thanks to the joint efforts of the two universities, an international network of academic institutions in the field of higher education, scientific research, and innovation was created, with representatives from almost all countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and China. Within the framework of this Network and the established good personal contacts, large-scale international scientific conferences were held, joint projects were developed, numerous ideas for innovation were proposed, and dozens of scientific articles were published. Academic mobility of scientists, students, and PhD students was developed. An Alliance (with its center in Ningbo) of engineering universities from China and CEE countries was established. Even at the beginning of our fruitful cooperation, I was invited by the Ningbo University of Technology, as well as by some Chinese companies, to visit the country and get acquainted with their activities. Later, our Chinese hosts visited Bulgaria, and then we continued the acquaintances made in Ningbo discussions and useful exchange of information. After the positive talks in Sofia and the signing of a Special Licensed Agreement, we exchanged visits again, during which I personally managed to get acquainted with many technology tests and demonstrations in factories and companies. During the visit, we held an open Rector's Council, at which I was honored with the title of "Visiting Professor," as the Rector of the Ningbo University of Technology personally handed me the diploma. Later, I visited the Ningbo University of Technology several more times, during which we held many meetings with leading specialists from various leading Chinese companies. Because China is unmatched in the field of innovation in all areas! I managed to visit three more different factories and Chinese companies that show interest in all initiatives related to the mega-project "Belt and Road".
B. What are the prospects for cooperation between Bulgaria and China in the field of technology and innovation, in the context of relations between China and CEE countries?
O. The international activity that we have demonstrated in recent years was noticed by the Central Government of China and, personally at the initiative of Chinese President Xi Jinping (expressed during the China-Central and Eastern Europe Summit 2021 on February 9, 2021), the Innovation Cooperation and Services Platform and the China-CEE Research Center were established and adopted. An International Innovation Network for Academic Exchange has also been built, which is encouraged by the competent scientific and technological authorities. The goal is to exchange ideas and plans for patents, innovations, and development in a number of key areas of China and the CEE countries, and the Research Center to serve joint work between universities, research institutes, and business enterprises. Together with our Chinese colleagues, we could achieve a lot, because China has no equal in innovative technologies and future projects!
