A total of 69 projects by students from grades 8 to 12 of the Technological University "Electronic Systems" (TUES) at the Technical University - Sofia were presented during the online exhibition "TUES Fest 2021" on April 24 and 25 this year. The projects, created by 130 students, competed in 3 categories:
"Robotics and embedded microcomputer systems";
"Software";
"Computer networks".
The largest number of projects - 35, were created by students in the "Robotics" category, 28 were software applications, and 6 proposals were developed for computer networks. The projects themselves were distinguished by ambitious goals, a large dose of maturity, and potential for real-world implementation. The "48 Hours TUES" event also included a rich two-day program, alternating between video presentations of student projects and panel discussions from the "TUES - All Perspectives" section. "TUES Fest 2021" was broadcast live on YouTube, with the event organized by school students with the help of their mentors - former graduates of the school and representatives of IT companies sponsors. It is indicative that all video presentations, participant involvement, microphones, and jury were conducted without any issues, demonstrating not only the technical skills and dedication of the team but also the excellent organization of the event. During the two-day "marathon," the entire TUES community was presented through the eyes of students, teachers, school alumni, representatives of TU - Sofia, and the IT industry. More than 30 panelists shared their perspectives on the school and what distinguishes it from other schools. The projects themselves are extremely ambitious in terms of set goals, technologies used, and scientific knowledge, and some turned out to be almost ready for creating a startup company. Among the ideas were both typically youthful ones like a guitar simulation, Morse code, and a listening device, as well as gamer projects Space Invaders (battlefield between the guardian of humanity and aliens), Ponk, and the chess game site Chess King and the games Green Revolution, Protect The Planet, and No Famine! (which encourages players to treat their food better). Many projects in the "Robotics" category are aimed at automating the smart home and controlling devices within it. Among them are the virtual assistant Edwin, the IoT system AutoHome, SmartParno for local heating control, the smart socket SmartAssociate Socket, the TTT box sensor system, and others. Several extremely ambitious projects also made an impression, which are among the goals of leading world scientific centers. The project Eleggo by five 12th-grade students, for example, strives to create a prototype of a programmable brain-computer interface that performs tasks such as detecting hand movements, directed thinking, and others by interpreting brain electromagnetic waves. Over 30 awards were presented at the special ceremony on April 25. The best project in the "Robotics and Embedded Systems" category was determined to be Smart TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY – SOFIA News Review TRADITION IN SUCCESS! 07.06.2021 g. 5 Medical Box - a smart automatic medicine box that monitors the correct intake of medications by elderly people and people suffering from dementia, developed by Georgi Korchakov from class 12G. The award was presented by Prof. Dr. Eng. Ivo Iliev, Dean of the FET at TU - Sofia. The "smart" medical box also won special awards from PARA - The Professional Association of Robotics and Automation, VMware, and M2M Services. The best project for computer networks was developed by student Venelin Atanasov from class 12G. His system for building a fully functional network for an internet service provider aims to deeply investigate the technologies used. The Director of TUES, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eng. Stela Stefanova, presented the award to Venelin Atanasov. The main functionality of his system is to provide fast and reliable internet connection for clients. This is why the project also won an award from "A1 Bulgaria". In the "Software" category, the project by Madlen Sarkisyan from class 12V was recognized as the best by the jury, receiving special awards from TelebidPro and Isobar Commerce as well. Sarkisyan's system, Face Mask Detection System, practically monitors compliance with anti-epidemic measures and specifically the wearing of masks. The award was presented by the scientific supervisor of TUES, Prof. Dr. Eng. Tanya Vasileva. The three best projects in the respective categories were awarded by the technological jury, whose members had examined each competing project in detail two days before the event, evaluating them using a complex methodology including completeness, complexity, degree of implementation, as well as the presentation of the idea and project. The "Media Favorite" award went to Veselin Angelov from class 12B and his project ESPEES, which involves finding free parking spaces and paying every 15 minutes. The following projects were honored with special awards: The Audience Award in the "Software" category was won by Alexander Velev and Andrey Ezakov from class 9G with their project UniFinder. The Audience Award in the "Computer Networks" category was won by Martin Kondov from class 12G with his corporate network with VPN project. The Audience Award in the "Robotics and Embedded Systems" category was won by Stefan Bosev from class 11A with his radio-controlled table project.
