Since the beginning of the new academic year, the Laboratory of Radiation Protection at the Department of Thermal Engineering and Nuclear Energy of the Technical University should start working. A similar laboratory existed quite some time ago, but currently there is none, and students are trained only in theory or at various companies working with the Kozloduy NPP. Now, with the help of industry companies, the professors are building such a laboratory, Associate Professor Kalin Filipov, head of the department, said: "Several companies helped with financial means and equipment, part of it is new, part of it is already used, but it does an ideal job for our purposes. Our goals are, on the one hand, purely demonstrative, talking to students about different measuring instruments, about different techniques, about measuring radiation, so that they can see these instruments live, and of course, they will also be able to do laboratory exercises." In recent years, the decrease in the number of students has stopped, but they are still not enough, Kalin Filipov added: "Since last year, the specialty has been protected, so we could exceed the allocated quotas, but we cannot fill them, we are roughly at about 50 percent of the requested quotas for bachelors. For master's students, things are much better and in recent years there has definitely been growth. There is great interest from students who have graduated from other specialties. At the moment, the problem of securing personnel has been partially solved to the extent that we can provide master's students, but this is a temporary solution".
