Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", New Bulgarian University and Technical University – Sofia, are in the top three positions in the top 10 of higher education institutions in the country for 2021 according to the UniRank ranking – the independent global search engine for higher education. In the top three of private universities are New Bulgarian University, American University in Bulgaria, and Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar". Fourth is Ruse University "Angel Kanchev". The ranking includes 48 universities in the country and is based on valid, impartial web metrics provided by independent sources, which include: the accreditation rating of the higher education institution, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral study programs, accessibility to resources, visibility on the internet, high achievements, trust, and authority. In the ranking for popularity on the web and social media, the top three positions on "Facebook" are occupied by Veliko Tarnovo University "Sts. Cyril and Methodius", European University for Economics and Management, and New Bulgarian University, while on "Twitter" – American University in Bulgaria, New Bulgarian University, and the Higher School of Management in Varna. UniRank is an international portal for higher education and a search engine that includes reviews and rankings of over 13,800 officially recognized universities and colleges in 200 countries. Its goal is to provide information on which are the most popular universities by country or region. The ranking does not use data provided by the universities.
