The Institute for Sustainable Transition and Development within the structure of Trakia University was established at the request of the university rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dobri Yarkov. It is intended to conduct fundamental and applied research in priority areas of science for the university and the country. The Institute will represent a modern scientific infrastructure, uniting the research activities of three higher education institutions in interdisciplinary research with better conditions and more opportunities for the participation of doctoral students and students in its scientific activities. Research will be conducted in the fields of new industrial technologies, biotechnology, energy systems and supply security, digitalization and smart grids in urban environments, mining, agriculture and forestry, and electromobility. The new unit will operate in partnership with the Technical University – Sofia, the University of Mining and Geology St. Ivan Rilski, municipal authorities, and nationally representative organizations of workers and employees. The Institute will unite the work of research groups in three sectors: Economic Analysis and Projects, Agriculture and Biotechnology, and Mining and Energy Systems, which will work on projects from national and international scientific programs, and will prepare forecasts and strategies for the development of the regional and national economy.
