The metal part of the manhole was under high voltage, according to the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Technical University – Prof. Valentin Kolev. One of the versions for the incident, in which a 16-year-old boy died in Sofia due to an electric shock, is the illegal power supply of a private property. The question is: Who allowed it? There will be expert examinations, required documents from all institutions and from a merchant in the area. We sought the opinion of experts. The metal part of the manhole was under high voltage, according to the energy expert and Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Technical University – Professor Valentin Kolev. "One foot stepped there, and the other foot was on the ground, resulting in a high potential difference between the two points where the two feet were standing, creating a danger for the victim," Prof. Kolev explains on site. In science, this is called "step voltage," or the flow of current through a person along the path foot – foot. Depending on the resistance of the insulating mat and shoes, the person may be subjected to different voltage values. "In principle, insulation should be provided, but it also depends on the shoes. Some shoes have conductive soles," notes Prof. Kolev. And at the moment, the site of the incident poses risks to pedestrians, according to experts, as the manhole is not sufficiently secured. "It is dangerous even to be 50 cm away from it. These barriers should be set up on a larger perimeter. These two cables – the black one powers this commercial property, and the white one, passing through the pole, powers another commercial property. It is unacceptable to do it this way. These cables should be either laid underground or overhead," explains Prof. Kolev. He and other electrical engineers, whom we sought for comment, emphasize that the answers to the tragedy are under the lid of the dangerous manhole. And for them, it is closed.
