Three graduates from the "Aviation Technology and Engineering" specialization - Viktor Genov, Martin Tomanov, and Simeon Aleksiev, together with their instructor, Assistant Dr. Eng. Dimitar Ginchev from the Department of Air Transport at the Faculty of Transport of TU-Sofia, designed and built an aviation simulator for educational purposes. The idea for the project emerged during a practical session for the course "Aviation Instruments and Automatic Systems" taught by Assistant Dr. Eng. Dimitar Ginchev. Initially, the enthusiasts renovated a room in the 10th academic building of TU-Sofia, then designed and constructed the aviation simulator. At first, the boys funded their initiative with their own money. This year, they participated in the competition for innovative student projects "Student Innovation Hub," organized by the Research Sector of TU-Sofia, and the project won funding from it. This competition encourages the development of experimental models and prototypes, as well as the submission of patent and utility model applications with student participation. The simulator allows for the demonstration of flight activities through their various stages in "Flight" mode. Currently, flights of light aircraft, heavy aircraft, and helicopters can be simulated, with the possibility of adding additional aircraft models. Different airports are simulated under various meteorological conditions and at different times of the day. "This is a complex system. With this system, students acquire basic skills that they must have in aviation. It is very important because it is related to human life, and therefore aviation companies value students who possess this knowledge very much," says Eng. Dimitar Ginchev. In working with the simulator, students learn how aircraft instruments work, how to observe important basics - checking the aircraft before takeoff, flight plan, checking system frequencies, radio navigation and radio communication systems, etc. "The interest is very high, because last year we had a state order for 70 places, 591 people applied, of whom 245 listed this specialization as their first choice," explains Prof. Mikhail Todorov. The student project will participate with fun demonstrations on November 27-28, 2020, at the upcoming edition of "European Researchers' Night," organized by the British Council, and at the scientific conferences "BulTrans-2020" and "Hemus 2020".
