
Starting from May 20, 2015, the annual competition for the presentation of the Award of the President of the Republic in the name of the world-renowned inventor of Bulgarian origin John Atanasov, who created the first digital electronic computer, has been launched.
The "John Atanasov" Award of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria has been awarded since 2003 to outstanding young Bulgarian researchers in the field of computer science on a global scale. Among the laureates of the Award are current heads of research departments at leading research institutes and global private companies in various areas of computer science, including cryptography, computational linguistics, and robotics.

The awards are established in the following categories:
"John Atanasov – Students and Their Teachers" Certificates, for students who have achieved the highest results in international student competitions in informatics and information technology and their teachers;
"First Steps in Computer Science" Certificates, aimed at students and students in the age group 12 – 22 years, who have achieved high results with their own projects in national and international scientific competitions, and
John Atanasov Certificates for Projects with Significant Public Contribution, recognizing individual and team projects whose creators are under 35 years old and which address issues of public importance through computer technologies. The latter is open to startups and independent projects in the private, non-governmental, and academic sectors.
The recipients of the John Atanasov Award and Certificates are determined by a commission with the participation of leading scientists and professionals in the field of computer science.
TU – Sofia can boast of its graduate Dr. Eng. Plamen Ivanov, from FCSU, who was awarded the "John Atanasov" Certificate for 2014.
