European Researchers' Night FRESHER 2020 will offer 200 online scientific events
Hundreds of scientists from across the country will participate with presentations, discussions, demonstrations, and other formats, providing more than 24 hours of content over three consecutive days – November 27, 28, and 29.
What is the science behind the saying "a day in the year feeds" and the fairy tale "The Lost Bee" by Elin Pelin, and how has the Bulgarian diet changed due to shifts in livelihoods, natural conditions, and human activity over the centuries? Did you know that plants, like humans, suffer from obesity? What are the herbs of Bulgaria and how do they become medicines? What actually happens to plants during the process of genetic transformation to become genetically modified plants, and what do the e's mean? How will we grow plants in space, and what is the diet of athletes? Can we try a space flight simulator? What inventions and innovations are Bulgarian scientists working on, and what does Wikipedia say about Covid-19? These are just a small part of the questions to which we will find answers in 200 online events in various scientific fields and topics, directly related to the lives of young and old in this year's edition of the European Researchers' Night 2020 in Bulgaria. The mega-event, involving 20 main and 35 associated partners from across the country under a project of the European Commission, will be held entirely virtually this year due to the COVID-19 crisis. The pandemic situation will not allow us to be together physically, but the program offers an amazing opportunity to make your choice from the rich menu of presentations, demonstrations, live talks, and other very interesting activities in over 50 channels on social media. During the European Researchers' Night, you will be able to see hundreds of active scientists from Bulgaria – of different ages, from various scientific fields, from institutes and universities from across the country. You have never had the opportunity to visit so many laboratories and hear so many exciting stories about the science that surrounds us, all firsthand – from the very people who have dedicated themselves to it.
The national program will begin on November 27 at 18:00 and you will be able to watch it on our profiles at https://www.facebook.com/ResearchersBGand on our YouTube channel - European Researchers' Night.
The welcome address to researchers and viewers will be delivered by Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel, Deputy Minister of Education and Science Karina Angelieva, and Deputy Mayor of Sofia Todor Chobanov. The program will continue with presentations, discussions, demonstrations, films, virtual visits, exhibitions, and many other formats. The host of the scientific studio, which will be located in Sofia Tech Park, will be BNT journalist Nadya Obretenova. Researchers from educational institutions and organizations from Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas, Varna, Ruse, Pleven, Stara Zagora, Blagoevgrad, Sliven, Gabrovo, Dolna Mitropoliya Municipality, Veliko Tarnovo, and others will participate in the Night. The program of each of our partners, as well as links to their broadcasting channels, can be found at - https://fresher-researchersnight.bg/. The codename of the innovative project for the Night, in which more than 400 cities in Europe and around the world participate simultaneously, is FRESHER - an acronym from the English language meaning Find Research Everywhere, SHare and expERience. The initiative to popularize science and its achievements is funded by the European Commission under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions program of Horizon 2020. The FRESHER team has chosen as the focus of this year's Night events the theme of plant health, declared by the UN for 2020, which is aimed at the future of the planet in the context of preserving the plant world, ecology, the role of plants for human health, as well as for the economy, and many other fields. The Night's program will continue for several more months and includes visits of scientists to schools, citizen science initiatives, and many others. Several competitions have launched in preparation for the Night of Researchers events, primarily targeting children and young people who are usually excluded from access to science. "Fantastic Plants (and How to Find Them)" is a drawing competition for deaf and hard-of-hearing children and young people, challenging them to share their admiration for nature through an image of an unusual plant or tree. "Song Sheets" is a competition for blind and visually impaired children and young people to create an audio recording inspired by or featuring sounds from nature. The "Strong Tenderness" challenge aims to encourage the inclusion of women in science through essays. "Roots of Inspiration" aims to honor inspiring teachers nominated by their students. Additionally, we are collecting the "Kazana Duma" fund from quotes about or by scientists, which will be used at the end of the project to publish a new set of fortune cookies to accompany a fragrant cup of coffee in cafes. We also opened applications for "A Day in the Life of an Academician" – an exciting adventure where students will be able to observe how a day in the life of some of the most senior scientists in Bulgaria – academicians of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – unfolds. During the Night, we will award the winners of some of the competitions, while extending the deadline for others to allow more children and young people to participate.
