REFRESH is an innovative project for the European Researchers' Night during the 2018-2019 period, led by the Centre for Research and Analysis. The project involves 21 main and 27 associate partners from across the country, with programs in 14 settlements. The program is packed with diverse activities in schools, competitions, meetings with scientists in research institutes and universities, on a train, in the mountains, and on a ship. In 2018, the central focus is the European Year of Heritage and the European Capital of Sport, while in 2019, a connection will be made with the European Capital of Culture and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Astronomical Union.
The European Researchers' Night is carried out with the financial support of the European Commission under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. Within the framework of the 'European Researchers' Night 2018' project, the Technical University – Sofia is one of the partners in the project and will open the doors of the Faculty of Mechanical-Technological Engineering.
The main goal is to improve public understanding of science and to increase engagement with societal issues through:
- increasing public awareness in the fields of education, scientific research, and innovation;
- overcoming negative stereotypes about scientists through information and direct contact, presenting them as accessible, creative, concerned, and society-supporting individuals;
- expanding citizens' access to the benefits of scientific activity, thereby engaging science and society in a mutually beneficial collaboration;
- improving the communication skills of active scientists, innovators, and entrepreneurs;

REFRESH Photo and Video
An online photo and video competition for young people that challenges participants to discover the science around them, take a photo or selfie with their mobile phones, or record a 3-minute video on a scientific topic and share it with us.
REFRESH Touch
This drawing competition is aimed at children and young people with hearing impairments and seeks to explore how they see themselves in science.
REFRESH Voices
A series of audio recordings dedicated to scientific topics that will be presented during the event and will be available for download – with a special focus on the needs of people with visual impairments.
REFRESH Girls in Science
An online essay contest on how girls see themselves in science and technology.
