At the Technical University – Sofia, training is conducted in specialties within the field of thermal engineering and nuclear energy at all three levels – bachelor, master, and doctoral. The bachelor's specialty is general – "Thermal Engineering and Nuclear Energy," and it covers basic disciplines that form the foundation of the technology. The master's program in "Thermal Engineering" provides students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills acquired at the bachelor's level. The course in "Thermal Engineering" prepares master's engineers who possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, enabling them to become highly qualified professionals with opportunities for employment in research laboratories, engineering firms, and thermal power plants. Graduates are capable of conducting exploratory, research, design, planning, production, technological, operational, installation, and maintenance activities in thermal power plants, district heating plants, industrial thermal energy facilities, heat and gas supply enterprises, engineering organizations working in the field of thermal engineering, etc.

Application for the specialty is based on documents confirming completion of one of the following educational and qualification levels:

“BACHELOR” and/or “MASTER” in specialties from the field of higher education 5. TECHNICAL SCIENCES or professional directions 4.5 Mathematics or 4.6. Informatics and Computer Science
“BACHELOR” and/or “MASTER” by specialty from the field of higher education 9. SECURITY AND DEFENSE or professional direction 4.1 Physical Sciences
„PROFESSIONAL BACHELOR“ by specialties from professional direction: 5.4. Energy
Admission is carried out through state-funded places and paid forms, with candidates for state-funded education being eligible if they have not previously studied at this or a higher level of education under state funding.

Depending on your educational background, the duration of study for the specialty Thermal Engineering is as follows:

1 year for educational-qualification level “bachelor” and/or “master” by specialties from the field of higher education 5. TECHNICAL SCIENCES or professional directions 4.5 Mathematics or 4.6. Informatics and Computer Science
2 years for an educational and qualification degree of "bachelor" and/or "master" in specialties from the field of higher education 9. SECURITY AND DEFENSE or professional direction 4.1 Physical Sciences
2 years for an educational and qualification degree of "professional bachelor" in specialties from the professional direction: 5.4. Energy

The Master's specialization "Thermal Engineering" is a natural continuation of the Bachelor's specialization "Thermal Engineering and Nuclear Energy." The general theoretical training is provided in the first semester of study, where the following subjects are covered: Mathematical Modeling and Optimization, Construction Materials in Power Plants, Computational Fluid Mechanics, Environmental Protection Systems and Equipment for Thermal Power Plants, and others. Specialized training includes Industrial Thermal Engineering, Thermal Testing of Equipment in CHP Plants, Energy Conversion Technologies and Systems, Operation of CHP Plants, and Monitoring and Control Systems for Power Plants.

The Master of Engineering in "Thermal Energy Engineering" is trained to develop, design, operate, and implement energy steam generators, steam turbines for CHP and CCHP plants, technological facilities and systems for combined heat and power plants (CHP), modules for combined heat and power generation, to manage operationally and automate technological processes in main and auxiliary units and facilities in CHP and industrial thermal energy engineering, to manage thermophysical and water-chemical processes in CHP, as well as systems related to technical safety.

The areas of professional implementation for graduates with a master's degree in the specialty include all sectors of the national economy, universities, research, design, engineering, and technological departments, offices, laboratories, consulting and trading companies, ministries, state agencies, heat power plants, district heating companies, industrial enterprises with a significant energy component, gas companies, and others.
