The training is structured as follows:

• Module 1 (general theoretical training): The first part of the training includes three mandatory academic disciplines through which students acquire basic knowledge in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics, as well as knowledge about the energy resources of the country and the world, the overall energy system, and trends in its development. In the disciplines "Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer" and "Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Engineering," fundamental concepts and physical laws in energy engineering, the basics of energy conversion processes and technologies, and the basics of methods for their analysis are studied. Students become familiar with the main devices and elements that make up energy conversion systems. The discipline "Energy Resources and Sustainable Energy Development" provides knowledge about the available resources of fossil fuels, the technologies for their extraction and utilization, the ecological and economic aspects of conventional energy, as well as about the general direction of development of the energy sector, concepts, and strategies for sustainable energy development.
• Module 2 (specialized training): This module includes six mandatory and two elective disciplines in which the technologies and systems for utilizing solar energy, geothermal energy, hydro energy, wind energy, and biomass energy are studied. These disciplines are designed to accumulate solid knowledge and skills related to: (1) analysis and assessment of the available potential of the studied renewable energy sources (RES); (2) the various possibilities, technologies, and systems for converting the energy of renewable sources into mechanical work, electricity, heat, and cooling; (3) the specific features in converting the energy of the studied renewable source, as well as the impact of the corresponding energy conversion processes on the environment; (4) the integration of RES into the electrical grid and at end-users of energy; (5) European policies and regulatory requirements related to the implementation and operation of systems for utilizing RES.
• Module 3 (thesis): The training concludes with a thesis, in which the acquired general theoretical and specialized knowledge and skills are applied.

Successfully graduated students in this specialization can find professional realization and career development in various organizations, enterprises, and institutions from the private and public sectors, whose activities are related to:

• Analysis and assessment of the potential for utilization of solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal energy and biomass energy;
• Analysis and assessment of the technical-economic and ecological indicators of technologies for the utilization of the aforementioned renewable energy sources (RES);
• Application of specialized software for optimizing the operational and regime parameters of RES utilization systems;
• Application of specialized methods and software for energy modeling and simulation;
• Preparation of expert opinions and provision of consulting services in the field of RES utilization;
• Organization and management of projects for RES utilization;
• Implementation and operation of RES utilization systems;
• Organization, management, and execution of research and development activities in the field of renewable energy sources (RES);
• Organization of activities and implementation of policies for the effective utilization of RES potential;
• Organization and execution of advertising and commercial activities related to RES utilization technologies and their integration into final energy consumption.

Examples of such organizations, enterprises, and institutions include:

• Companies specializing in the production of components for RES utilization systems or engaged in the installation, operation, and maintenance of such systems;
• Trading companies engaged in the supply and trade of components and equipment for RES utilization systems in energy, industry, agriculture, and households;
• Consulting firms conducting analyses in the field of RES utilization technologies;
• Research centers and laboratories engaged in research and development activities in the field of renewable energy sources.
• All other organizations, offices, and companies whose field of activity is related to renewable energy sources (RES);
• Non-governmental organizations aiming to promote sustainable energy development;
• State administration structures at the national, regional, and municipal levels, as well as other national and international institutions whose field of activity is in the field of energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable energy development.

Graduates of this specialty also have the opportunity to continue their studies in the doctoral programs of the Faculty of Energy Machinery at TU-Sofia.
