At the Technical University – Sofia, training in nuclear specialties is conducted at three levels – bachelor, master, and doctoral. The bachelor's specialty is general – "Thermal Engineering and Nuclear Energy" and it covers the basic disciplines that form the foundation of the technology. In the master's specialty "Nuclear Energy", narrowly specialized disciplines related to the operation of nuclear facilities, nuclear safety, nuclear fuels, and nuclear fuel cycles are studied, with special attention given to modern designs of nuclear energy reactors, simulator training, and the use of specialized software products that are widely used not only in the master's but also in the bachelor's course. Doctoral training is conducted in the scientific specialty "Nuclear Energy Installations and Equipment".The specialty "Nuclear Energy" is the only one in the country that prepares nuclear energy engineers, with the master's program being a natural continuation of the bachelor's specialty "Thermal Engineering and Nuclear Energy".Department of THERMAL ENGINEERING AND NUCLEAR ENERGY

One of the many, and perhaps the most fundamental, questions that every young specialist asks themselves is precisely this – why should I choose this particular specialization?

The Master's program in "Nuclear Energy" provides students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills acquired during their Bachelor's degree. The "Nuclear Energy" course prepares Master's engineers who possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to become highly qualified professionals, with opportunities for employment in research laboratories, engineering firms involved in safety analysis and simulation modeling of nuclear facilities and nuclear power plants, as part of the engineering or operational staff, both domestically and internationally. Approximately 90% of graduates from this specialization begin working in roles that require qualifications in the field of nuclear energy. The Master's program includes internship and scholarship programs, as well as diverse opportunities for practical research activities, and participation in competitions and conferences dedicated to nuclear energy.

Application for the specialty is based on documents confirming completion of one of the following educational and qualification degrees:

"BACHELOR" in the specialty "Thermal Engineering and Nuclear Energy"
"BACHELOR" and/or "MASTER""in specialties from the fields of higher education 5. TECHNICAL SCIENCES or 9. SECURITY AND DEFENSE or professional directions
4.1 Physical Sciences, 4.5 Mathematics or 4.6. Informatics and Computer Science
"PROFESSIONAL BACHELOR" in specialties from professional field: 5.4. Energy
Admission is carried out through state-funded places and paid tuition, with state-funded training open only to applicants who have not previously studied at this or a higher level of education under state funding.

Depending on your prior education, the duration of study for the Nuclear Energy specialty is as follows:

1 year for the educational and qualification level of "Bachelor" in the specialty "Thermal Energy and Nuclear Energy"
2 years for the educational and qualification levels of "Bachelor" and/or "Master" in specialties from the fields of higher education 5. TECHNICAL SCIENCES or 9. SECURITY AND DEFENSE or professional fields
4.1 Physical Sciences, 4.5 Mathematics or 4.6. Informatics and Computer Science
2 years for an educational and qualification degree of "professional bachelor" in specialties from the professional field: 5.4. Energy

The Master's specialization "Nuclear Energy" is a natural continuation of the Bachelor's specialization "Thermal Energy and Nuclear Energy". The main disciplines studied include Fluid Mechanics in NPPs, Neutron-Physical Processes in NPPs, Thermal Physics of Nuclear Reactors, Nuclear Fuels and Materials, Design, Operation, and Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plants, Modern Nuclear Reactors, Management of Nuclear Knowledge, Simulation Modeling in NPPs, etc. The training in the Master's specialization, similar to the Bachelor's program, also includes a mandatory pre-graduation internship, which takes place at the Kozloduy NPP. While in the Bachelor's program the internship has a more exploratory purpose, in the Master's program the internship is related to specific job positions and assignment of topics for development, which at the end of the internship are defended before a commission with members from TUTS and Kozloduy NPP. Within the pre-graduation internship, training on a full-scale simulator of a nuclear energy reactor is also included.

A successful graduate of the Master's program in Nuclear Energy can work in a variety of positions in the country and abroad that require high qualifications:

Engineering and operational staff in nuclear power plants;
Engineering and expert positions in the fields of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management;
Expert positions in the state administration (Nuclear Regulatory Agency, Energy and Water Regulatory Commission, etc.);
Design, construction, operation, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities;
Work in research and applied centers, universities, and development companies;
Expert and engineering positions in the field of nuclear safety, radiation protection, and work with ionizing radiation sources;
Design, operation, and maintenance of structures, systems, and components of nuclear facilities;

The Master's degree in "Nuclear Energy" is an important prerequisite for occupying middle and senior management positions in the energy sector.
