You will become familiar with the vast range of applications of thermal and refrigeration systems in buildings, transport, industry, the cold chain, data centers, and others, as well as with the appropriate technologies and engineering solutions for each of them.
You will become familiar with the possibilities for utilizing various energy resources – traditional and alternative – through high-efficiency heat and cold generators, including combined heat, cold, and power production systems; solar, geothermal, and other systems using renewable energy sources; vapor-compression and alternative refrigeration and heat pump systems.
You will acquire knowledge and skills in the design, construction, regulation and control, maintenance and operation, diagnostics and analysis, computer modeling and simulation, and research and development of thermal and refrigeration systems using conventional and renewable energy sources.

The Department of Thermal and Refrigeration Engineering is the leading academic unit in Bulgaria in this field, with over 60 years of history and tradition. The Department has established cooperation with local and foreign universities, as well as with enterprises in the private and public sectors. This cooperation allows some students to gain internship experience in their specialty even during their studies, to establish contacts with potential future employers, and to develop their diploma projects in real conditions and with real tasks.

The Department of Thermal and Refrigeration Engineering also conducts research activities, in which students of the specialty can participate. This activity is related to participation in research projects funded by national and international sources, including with international partners under the European Union's research and innovation programs. The Department has a modern, high-quality experimental base, established in the last ten years. Research projects provide an additional opportunity for cooperation between teachers and students, and give students the chance to gain valuable experience in planning, conducting, and presenting scientific research, as well as in creating innovative solutions and products.

The training in the specialty "Thermal and Refrigeration Technologies and Systems" is structured in stages and conducted in such a way as to provide students with general and specialized engineering knowledge:

In the first stage of training, students acquire the necessary general education and engineering knowledge in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, material properties, electrical engineering and electronics, information technology, computer-aided design and modeling, as well as the basics of standardization and requirements for the development and formatting of technical documentation.
In the second stage, students study fundamental and key disciplines for energy engineering such as Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, and Heat and Mass Transfer, which provide the necessary knowledge base for understanding the physics of basic energy conversion and transfer processes.
Based on this knowledge base, the final – specialized part of the training is built, where the main place is occupied by the following disciplines: Heating Engineering, Refrigeration Engineering, Air Conditioning, Heat Exchangers, Heat and Mass Transfer Systems, Industrial Ventilation and Dust Extraction, Refrigerators and Refrigeration Plants, Fuel Engineering and Technologies, Heating and Gas Supply, Thermal Management, Hydraulic and Pneumatic Machines, Thermal Measurements and Instruments, Regulation and Control of Thermal Processes, Renewable Energy Sources, Engineering Economics, Engineering Ecology, and others.

At the end of their training, each student develops a thesis under the supervision of a lecturer from the leading department.
