Engineering Safety and Occupational Health

Engineering safety encompasses a set (system) of knowledge, aimed at ensuring the safety and hygiene of the working environment. It should not be viewed solely in terms of making hazardous facilities and technologies safe. Safety encompasses both better design of machines and facilities, as well as better management and control of hazards, through effective risk management regarding safe working conditions and impact on human health.Ensuring safe and healthy working conditions is a right guaranteed by the Constitution and regulated by the Law on Occupational Health and Safety (LOHS). Optimizing working conditions and the work environment leads to improved health status of workers; reduced material costs through absenteeism, reduced turnover, increased productivity and quality of labor.The need for training of personnel with a master's degree in this field has a significant social, economic, and health impact.

"Engineering Safety and Occupational Health" is a broad-profile specialty within the professional field of 5.13 „General engineering".This provides graduates with the opportunity to work in almost all sectors of economic activity in Bulgaria and abroad.

The training of students majoring in "Engineering Safety and Occupational Health" is overseen by the Department of "Hydroaerodynamics and Hydraulic Machines", which has accumulated a history, traditions, and material base over 70 years.
Instruction in specialized subjects is conducted in spacious and comfortable classrooms equipped with all necessary technical means – computers, multimedia systems, etc.
The Department possesses one of the most extensive and rich educational and laboratory facilities in the university. It surpasses in many aspects the facilities of related specialties in the country.
Computer methods in the design and study of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment are widely represented in educational and research activities.
The faculty members of the department have excellent pedagogical training and rich practical experience, which allows them to prepare future engineers for real-world practice to the greatest extent possible.

For graduates with a Bachelor's and/or Master's degree from TU-Sofia or other universities in the country and abroad in specialties from the field 5. Technical Sciences, upon completion, they will acquire Master's degree in the professional field 5.13Total engineering.

Students study a total of thirteen subjects, including 10 mandatory ones, two elective subjects, and one course project. Six are general education subjects, and six are specialized ones. Students prepare a course project, which deepens their knowledge and builds practical skills regarding the design of engineering structures for environmental protection.

The general education subjects (Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Diseases, Psychology of Work, Engineering Forecasting, Management of Occupational Safety and Production Risks, Monitoring of Environmental and Production Risks, Legal Aspects of Engineering Safety and Occupational Health) form a basic understanding of engineering safety and occupational health and the protection of humans, while also creating the necessary motivation for their protection.

During the development and defense of the Thesis, they will acquire practical skills for developing engineering solutions for specific situations, preparing the necessary documentation, and presenting the development to the "Client" – in this case, the State Examination Commission.

The need for specialized training of safety engineers is current, as the demand for them has been increasing over the last decade. It is unacceptable that the usual form of training in the past, where the formation of an engineer specializing in the field of safety was achieved through postgraduate qualification practice, continues. The modern dynamics of engineering activities, new technologies, research, design, expert, and control activities require a contemporary approach to the issue.

4. In the system of fire and emergency safety and protection of the population from disasters and accidents
