Why choose this specialty?
All residential, commercial, public, office, and other types of buildings, server rooms, transport vehicles, logistics centers, industrial enterprises, and many other facilities require the presence of thermal and refrigeration technologies to ensure a healthy and comfortable living environment, maintain a specific microclimate, or carry out technological processes. Therefore, on a global scale, these technologies consume huge amounts of energy. Providing energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and economically viable solutions for them is a key element of sustainable energy development. Training in the specialty "Energy Conversion Technologies and Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Industrial Facilities" will prepare you as highly qualified specialists capable of creating, analyzing, evaluating, and implementing such solutions.
Choosing the specialty "Energy Conversion Technologies and Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Industrial Facilities":
- You will expand and deepen your knowledge of thermal and refrigeration technologies and systems and their applications in buildings, industry, the cold chain, and other sectors of the economy.
- You will learn various active and passive methods for utilizing renewable energy sources.
- You will acquire new knowledge and skills for the development, design, management, diagnostics, modeling, and analysis of thermal and refrigeration systems using conventional and renewable energy sources.
- You will become familiar with different approaches to energy modeling and simulation, techno-economic assessment, and comparative analysis of energy conversion technologies in buildings and industry.
- You will become familiar with the concepts of sustainable energy development, integrated design of sustainable buildings, and nearly zero-energy buildings, as well as with the corresponding approaches, methods, and national and international standards in the field of energy efficiency.
- You will learn how to address the challenge of meeting the energy needs of consumers while protecting the environment and the Earth's valuable resources by applying modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly solutions.
The Department of Thermal and Refrigeration Engineering is the leading academic unit in Bulgaria in this field, with over 60 years of history and tradition. The Department has established cooperation with local and foreign universities, as well as with enterprises in the private and public sectors. This cooperation allows some students to gain internship experience in their specialty even during their studies, to establish contacts with potential future employers, and to develop their diploma projects in real conditions and with real tasks.
The Department of Thermal and Refrigeration Engineering also conducts research activities, in which students of the specialty can participate. This activity is related to participation in research projects funded by national and international sources, including with international partners under the European Union's research and innovation programs. The Department has a modern, high-quality experimental base, established in the last ten years. Research projects provide an additional opportunity for cooperation between teachers and students, and give students the chance to gain valuable experience in planning, conducting, and presenting scientific research, as well as in creating innovative solutions and products.
