The Department of Electrical Apparatus has extensive experience in training PhD students in full-time, part-time, and independent study modes in the scientific specialty "Electrical Apparatus". The PhD program in the scientific specialty "Electrical Apparatus" offers broad opportunities for conducting research on innovative and socially significant topics and allows for the development of ideas in an environment with the most advanced research techniques in the laboratories of the Department of Electrical Apparatus. The training lasts 3 years for full-time and 4 years for part-time and independent study modes after successfully passing the candidate PhD exam in Electrical Apparatus and a foreign language. A supervisor for the PhD student is appointed, who is a habilitated person from the Department of Electrical Apparatus, and a topic for the PhD dissertation is determined. Under the supervision of the supervisor, in-depth theoretical and practical research is conducted in the field of the chosen topic. The PhD student works together with other research groups, industrial partners, and research institutions, depending on the dissertation topic. Graduating PhD students who successfully defend their dissertation acquire an educational and scientific degree (ESD) "Doctor" in the professional field "5.2. Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation", scientific specialty "Electrical Apparatus".The topics for which PhD students are trained in the scientific specialty "Electrical Apparatus" are current and are determined by the national priorities in the professional field 5.2 Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation and by the strategy for scientific research development of TU-Sofia and the Department of Electrical Apparatus, namely: development of methods and tools for innovative design and improvement of parameters and characteristics of electromagnetic and electromechanical devices and systems for application in the electrical engineering industry, energy, medicine, robotics, household, military industry, scientific research, etc. through the creation and application of new materials; through modeling, simulation, and visualization of fields, processes, and phenomena; through the development and application of precise measurement methods and techniques. In recent years, the possibilities for the application of new materials such as nano-magnetic materials, ferrofluids, magnetic elastomeric materials, graphene, metamaterials, etc. have been investigated. At the Department of Electrical Apparatus, modern hardware and software products for modeling, simulation, visualization, and for CAD systems are developed and applied; computer and information technologies such as IoT, neural networks, signal processing, and image processing are used. At the Department of Electrical Apparatus, energy-efficient devices, systems, and technologies are investigated, such as electromagnetic actuators; magnetic gearboxes; torque sensors, bioimpedance sensors, etc.; energy storage systems. The goal of the training in the PhD program "Electrical Apparatus" is for the PhD student to: - to acquire new academic knowledge and skills in specific areas that build upon those obtained at the master's level; - to develop professional qualifications and competencies after the defense of the dissertation; - to establish themselves as highly qualified scientists capable of independently solving complex problems in the theory and practice of Electrical Apparatus; - to develop skills for future academic development in the field of higher education. As a teaching unit, the Department of "Electrical Apparatus" has a modern experimental base in highly specialized laboratories, providing the opportunity to implement the planned scientific activities to achieve the goals of the doctoral program. The training of doctoral students is carried out through modern educational forms and methods, utilizing the scientific achievements of a team of highly qualified scientists - habilitated teachers. The achieved scientific results are presented in defended scientific papers and prestigious scientific publications, recognized by a large number of specialists not only in Bulgaria but also abroad. The training of doctoral students is strictly regulated in compliance with the necessary legal requirements, according to the Higher Education Act, the Act on the Development of the Academic Staff in the Republic of Bulgaria, the Regulation for the Application of the Act on the Development of the Academic Staff in the Republic of Bulgaria, and the regulatory framework of TU-Sofia related to the training of doctoral students at TU-Sofia.The requirements for the preparation of specialists with an educational and scientific degree of "Doctor" in doctoral programs at the Department of "Electrical Apparatus" are:● to have excellent training in the field of electrical engineering and electrical technologies;● possess specific knowledge in the field of electrical apparatus and electrical engineering technologies;● have knowledge in modern measurement techniques;● in-depth and creative understanding and use of literature in the specific field in which the dissertation topic is formulated;● demonstrate creative thinking;● acquire a high level of skills, knowledge, and qualifications for theoretical and/or experimental research work.May 11, 2023
