The Department of "Automation of Electric Drives" was established in 1974 upon the division of the Department of "Industrial Automation". In 1997, during the structural changes at TU-Sofia, the Department of "Automation of Electric Drives" merged with the Department of "Robotics". Within the structure of the merged Department AEZ, a section "Robotics" was formed, which offers the specialization in "Robotic Systems". The Department of "Automation of Electric Drives" is responsible for the education of students from the specialization "Electric Drives and Machine Automation" under the specialty "AUTOMATION, INFORMATION AND CONTROL ENGINEERING". Under the scientific supervision of department members, 43 doctoral dissertations have been defended by external candidates. Currently, department members teach 26 lecture courses. Members of the Department of "Automation of Electric Drives" are authors or co-authors of 31 textbooks and study aids, as well as 8 monographs and books.
The department conducts training in disciplines within the field of automated electric drives in the foreign faculties of TU-Sofia, as well as in other faculties of TU; some of the lecturers teach at OIOAE and at TF (aviation specialties), and this trend is expected to continue. We anticipate the creation of new disciplines to be taught in other faculties of TU-Sofia.
The department trains bachelors, masters, and doctoral students from the specialty AIUT in the following directions: Electric Drives and Machine Automation (EDMA) – for bachelors; Automated Production Systems (APS) – for masters
