The SMART project is part of the European Shift2Rail project for intelligent and sustainable growth, which promotes research and innovation in the railway sector. The idea of the European Shift2Rail project is to achieve a single European railway area (SERA) by: Improving the attractiveness and competitiveness of the European railway system to ensure a shift from road transport to a more sustainable mode of transport, namely rail transport;Maintaining the leading role of the European railway industry in the global market;Ensuring more efficient use of resources in the European railway transport system.
